Sasha Calle will play Supergirl at least once on the big screen, but questions remain regarding the actress' association with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In 2021, it was revealed that the actress had been cast as the DC Comics superhero in The Flash. Calle's Supergirl is one of a handful of DC characters expected to cross paths with Ezra Miller's Barry Allen in the upcoming movie.

Since then, much has changed in terms of what DC has in the pipeline. With James Gunn at the helm, DC has laid out a new plan for its movie and TV projects. Among the many films DC has on the horizon in the next few years is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a story that will borrow heavily from the comic book miniseries of the same name. Apparently, the cousin of Kal-El is about to be elevated from a supporting role in The Flash to the lead character in her own movie. As for who's playing her, it would be easy to assume that the actress behind the character will be Calle, but current circumstances have cast some doubt on that.

DCU Supergirl May Or May Not Be Sasha Calle's

DCEU Supergirl Sasha Calle

Thanks to The Flash, DC already has an actress on board as Supergirl, but that on its own doesn't prove she'll be headlining Woman of Tomorrow. What keeps her involvement from being a foregone conclusion is the recent confirmation from Gunn that The Flash will reboot the DCU. It would seem, based on that detail, that the time travel shenanigans occurring in the movie will result in a complete rebirth of the multiverse, thus allowing DC to press the reset button on the stories of multiple key characters from the DCEU. Since this will enable DC to recast Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman with new actors, there's no reason why it can't do the same with Calle.

Of course, it's known that DC cast Calle with a future for Supergirl beyond The Flash in mind, but that may not matter now. DC has moved in a new direction since Gunn took the reins as co-CEO of DC Studios. As evidenced by its change in position on Henry Cavill's Superman role and the decision to scrap Batgirl, DC is no longer on the same path it was on a year ago. So for the time being, it's hard to say if Calle's Supergirl is one of the superheroes DC intends to reboot.

Keeping Sasha Calle As Supergirl Makes Sense For The DCU

While DC certainly can pick a new actress to play Supergirl in Woman of Tomorrow, keeping Calle may be the better move. With the landscape of the DCU expected to experience so many adjustments over the next few years, DC should seize on chances to maintain some sense of continuity. Similar to how DC has opted to keep Momoa as Arthur Curry after Aquaman 2, DC should consider bringing back Calle as Supergirl, who is poised to be one of The Flash's biggest additions to the DCU.

Because of the implications that come with a reset, her story in The Flash - whatever it may be - shouldn't serve as an obstacle toward her return in Woman of Tomorrow. Since DC will be afforded an opportunity to abandon any backstory established for Kara by The Flash, Woman of Tomorrow won't struggle to tell its own Supergirl story.

The Flash Could Decide Who Plays Supergirl In The DCU

While it's true that The Flash's use of Calle may not have an impact on Woman of Tomorrow from a storytelling perspective, it can still play a role in whether or not DC brings her back for the new movie. If, for instance, Calle becomes a breakout star and her portrayal as Supergirl is hailed as one of the best parts of the movie, the odds of Calle reprising the role in Woman of Tomorrow would shoot up exponentially. Of course, the opposite could be true if audiences don't come away impressed with her take on the character.

What happens with The Flash as a whole will also be relevant to what comes next for Sasha Calle's Supergirl. In fact, its theatrical release may determine the future of several of the movie's characters, the titular hero and Supergirl included. Reports of Warner Bros. having high hopes for The Flash is a good sign for its box office numbers. If it turns out to the huge hit the studio expects it to be, DC can build off The Flash's success with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by putting Sasha Calle back on the big screen as the Girl of Steel.
