As Supergirl continues through its fifth season, fans have seen many a romantic coupling come and go on the show. Some lasted longer than anticipated while others never got the chance to start at all. Let's not forget the couples that have never been canon but who the fans wanted so desperately to happen.

There are couplings that fans couldn't wait to see the end and others they want to last forever. Kara Danvers has yet to find her happy ending, but there's still hope. Here are six romances that ended too soon, and four that didn't end soon enough.

TOO SOON: Kara and James Olsen

James and Kara never officially became a couple, but early in the series, there was a great deal of requited pining. They shared a kiss at one point but ultimately didn't get together because she no longer had romantic feelings for him.

She wanted to remain friends despite the strong attraction they had to one another. It was a case of finding that once she had what she wanted, she found she no longer needed it. But the friendship between Kara and James turned into a great one.

NOT SOON ENOUGH: James and Lucy Lane

Jimmy Olsen and Lucy Lane in Supergirl

Introducing the well-known Lane name from DC Comics with the estranged younger sister Lucy didn't bode well from the beginning. It was revealed that James and Lucy had a history, so putting them back together for another try spelled disaster from the start.

But James had developed feelings for Kara. Lucy found out when the disguised hero let on about a conversation she had with James about his father, something he never spoke to Lucy about in all the time they'd known each other. It was clear James's heart wasn't in it.

TOO SOON: Alex and Kelly Olsen

After losing Maggie, the fan base wanted to see Alex get her happily-ever-after. More than anything Alex wanted to be a mom, but a romance with James's sister Kelly Olsen wasn't a bad addition to the mix. The two shared a special connection after they helped one another and James through his PTSD.

But as often happens in the world of Supergirl, that happy ending didn't last. After the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, the mega-crossover event between the Arrowverse shows for Arrow's final season, Kelly was killed.

NOT SOON ENOUGH: Alex and Maxwell Lord

Alex and Maxwell only went on one date. Of course, it was so both of them could interrogate one another and dig for dirt. Alex wanted to question Max about the Kryptonian attack on Lord Technologies while Max wanted to plant a listening device on Alex to find out that Supergirl was her sister.

But the awkward attempted romance didn't pan out, as the experience left Alex questioning her sexuality. Thankfully, nothing happened between them and Alex went on to live out and proud as a lesbian.

TOO SOON: Winn Schott and Lyra Strayd

Supergirl - Winn meets Lyra

Always the sidekick, Winn for a brief shining moment got the girl when he met Lyra, a refugee Valerian from Starhaven. She turned out to be an art thief but reformed after meeting Winn and falling for him. The two helped James during his stint as the vigilante Guardian.

But not much happens with them after that. Lyra disappeared from the show and was only mentioned in passing once. Winn's passionate love affair with an alien was short-lived, but it would have been nice to see that play out.

NOT SOON ENOUGH: Mon-El and Imra Ardeen

As if bringing Mon-El's character back after his bittersweet goodbye wasn't bad enough, they brought him back from the future with a wife. Poor Imra Ardeen played the part of third-wheel as Mon-El and Kara reunited in Kara's present time. When Mon-El revealed that she was his wife the unwanted love triangle commenced.

The only reason Imra was present in season three was to add drama to Kara's love life. Mon-El ended up leaving her for Kara, which was terrible, but at least he let her off the hook.

TOO SOON: Alex and Sara Lance

Theirs was only meant as a one-time fling during one of the Arrowverse crossovers. Kara and Alex arrived at Barry and Iris's wedding both recently without significant others. The Legends team's Sara Lance joined Alex in a flurry of shots at the rehearsal dinner as she drowned her sorrows over Maggie.

One thing led to another and before they knew it, they were in bed together. Alex did the walk of shame the next day, and neither knew the other's name. It wasn't much of a romance, but fanfiction still followed.

NOT SOON ENOUGH: Supergirl and Mon-El

At first, fans were divided in their support for the pairing. As Mon-El grew and became a better person, the couple turned into one many could get behind. Then the unthinkable happened, and Mon-El could no longer live on Earth with Kara and he was sent off in a space pod.

That seemed the end of their love story. It was bittersweet but satisfactory. But then they brought him back, at least a future version of himself, and prolonged the inevitable. Kara and Mon-El had their time and it was over.

TOO SOON: James and Lena Luther

James got the shaft in romance for so long, it was nice to see him with a woman that challenged him but gave him warmth and affection. Neither character was perfect, and that's what made their relationship so interesting. Their respective friendships to Kara/Supergirl created an interesting dynamic between their personal and external relationships.

But in the end, between the rift with Lena and Supergirl in relation to James and Lena's power as James's boss after she buys CatCo, there was too much conflict.

TOO SOON: Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers

Affectionately known as Sanvers by the fan base, the audience was rooting for them. It's not often that queer characters on television are given a happy ending. When Alex and Maggie got engaged it looked like they would break that cycle.

But their differences in opinion on having children, where Alex wanted to be a mom and Maggie didn't want children, outweighed their love for one another. Neither was to blame in this breakup, but it was hard to see Alex so down after it happened.
