A Supergirl movie is targeting a release date at some point during Warner Bros.' 2022-2023 slate. Supergirl is one of the most iconic superheroes in the pages of DC comics and has been adapted a number of times including Helen Slater in the 1984 feature film Supergirl and Laura Vandervoort on Smallville. Most recently she has been brought to life by Melissa Benoist on the hit CW series Supergirl which is airing its final season.

A Supergirl solo film was first announced in August 2018 as a new direction to move the Superman franchise, yet little progress was made on the project in the years that followed. In February 2021 Sasha Callie was cast to play the character in the upcoming film, The Flash. The casting was met with excitement by fans and many fellow DC actors, including Melissa Benoist. Calle's casting indicated that plans for a Supergirl are moving forward again.

According to THR, Warner Bros. still has plans for a Supergirl film and it is in development as part of their 2022 to 2023 slate of films. Sasha Calle is expected to reprise her role as Supergirl from the upcoming Flash film. No word yet on an official release date but given the crowded 2022 line-up, 2023 seems like the likely release date but that could change if more film release dates are postponed.

The news of Supergirl still being on the Warner Bros. slate comes off the heels of the news that Warner Bros. had canceled Ava DuVernay's New Gods and James Wan's Aquaman spinoff film, The Trench. Yet the studio has greenlit a number of new films in the past few months hinting at a bold new direction for the franchise and one focused on a younger generation of heroes. Blue Beetle, Static Shock, Zatanna, Batgirl, and Hourman all have films in development at Warner Bros.

Supergirl's feature film coming shortly after her CW series is a stark contrast for how characters' popularity. Supergirl season 1 couldn't feature Superman due to Warner Bros.'s focus on Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Yet after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice underperformed and plans for another Superman movie stalled Superman appeared in Supergirl season 2 and is now the star of his own show, Superman & Lois. Meanwhile, Supergirl, who was filling in for her cousin on television while he was a movie star, is now trading places with him and will now be the face of a feature film while he headlines a television series. Regardless if it is The CW series or the upcoming Supergirl film, fans won't have to look hard to find the Girl of Steel.
