CBS' Supergirl series has become a strong new entry into the television superhero realm, delivering solid fall 2015 ratings and injecting some much-needed diversity into the genre. As Kara Danvers/Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) attempts to step out of the shadow of her famous cousin Superman to protect National City as Supergirl, the show's quality and recent strong moments overall justify the network's full-season pickup.

The show has included several DC characters for one-off appearances -- Livewire, JemmRed Tornado -- and has introduced another bona fide comic book superhero into the mix with the reveal that DEO agent Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) will have a supporting role as J’onn J’onzz, a.k.a. Martian ManhunterSupergirl has proven to be a successful conduit for lesser-known characters, but even more characters -- including some female superheroes -- could soon be joining the mix.

According to Comicbook.comSupergirl executive producer Ali Adler confirmed during a roundtable with reporters there are plans to introduce more female characters, including some with powers. When asked specifically if we can expect to see Kara in scenes with other females beyond her sister Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and boss Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), Adler said:

"We’re actually doing that now in our backorder from CBS, so we’re actually working on that right now. Absolutely. There might be a little twist to that too."

And as for whether or not we're going to see even more superpowered women on the show, Adler confirmed: "These are all very good questions. Yes." There is no indication that any of the existing female characters might end up with said abilities at this point, but it should be noted that Lucy Lane (played by Jenna Dewan Tatum on the show) has appeared as Superwoman in various comic book runs.

We do know that the villain Silver Banshee will appear when the show returns in 2016, along with Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Cameron Chase, who was a DEO agent in the comic books who starred in her own title for a time in the '90s. The character is appearing as an FBI agent on Supergirl, but it's more than likely to see her develop into a recurring character who is perhaps recruited into the DEO.

Given the fact that this is a show about Supergirl, we're more likely to see more female human characters and super-powered female villains than outright heroes like Wonder Girl or Power Girl (originally an Earth-2 version of Supergirl). It's too early to rule anything out, and the show's success and distinctness within the male-centric small-screen comic book series genre makes it a unique potential platform to launch more spinoffs for female heroes.

Supergirl will return January 4, 2016 @8pm.
