For this year's big Arrowverse crossover, both Kara and Alex from Supergirl will play prominent roles in the action. After the events of the season 2 finale, this upcoming year on Supergirl will see a number of changes occur. Winn will begin to take more of a leadership role in the DEO, while Cat looks to be moving into a career as the White House Press Secretary. At the heart of everything, however, will still be Kara and Alex. Their relationship has been one of the strongest through-lines of the series since the beginning, offering a spotlight on sisterhood that's rarely seen in television, let alone genre fiction.
When Supergirl returns, it will do so with a new actor in the role of young Kara. This will further allow the show to focus more on the history of Kara and Alex's relationship, which will be at the center of an early flashback episode in season 3. Meanwhile, the present day will see Kara struggle with her human and alien sides, while Alex and Maggie will continue their own relationship. It won't just be Supergirl that will focus on Kara and Alex, however, as they play a big role in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover event too.
EW spoke with Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg about how the show will focus on the Danver sisters in season 3. Kreisberg revealed that the pair will also factor heavily in the next big Arrowverse crossover:
“Kara and Alex are at the center of it through all four hours. One of the things we’ve been doing a lot this season is getting back to season 1 and really making it Danvers sisters-centric, so a lot of what’s going on this season is Kara and Alex doing things in tandem, and the crossover won’t be any different.”
Like last year's crossover, themes at play in each of the Arrowverse TV shows this next season will factor into the story of this year's big meet up. While this means that the crossover will be essential viewing for everyone watching any of the Arrowverse series, it will also allow the epic team-up to inject some pathos and character development into the action.
It's also good to know Kara and Alex will be a big part of the crossover. As Supergirl was new to The CW during last year's crossover, her show wasn't properly able to be integrated into the action. Though Supergirl herself played a big role in the action, not all of her supporting cast went along for the ride. Similarly, her hour of the crossover featured nothing more than a brief sting that tied things together. We've known for some time that Supergirl will be all-in for the upcoming crossover, but fans will be glad to hear Alex will be along for the ride.
Supergirl season 3 premieres Monday, October 9 at 8 pm ET on The CW.
