[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Supergirl ahead.]

-

Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) head back to their hometown in the trailer for the Supergirl season 3 episode, 'Midvale'. The Danver sisters are both on the mend at the moment; what with Kara still struggling from Mon-El's (Chris Wood) departure and having had her faith tested in more than one sense since then. Meanwhile, Alex has only just broken off her engagement to Maggie (Floriana Lima), now that the pair have realized that they have different desires when it comes to starting a family in the future.

The official synopsis for 'Midvale' - an episode cowritten by Jessica Kardos and Caitlin Parrish, and directed by Rob J. Greenlea - reveals that upon returning to the eponymous town, Kara in particular remembers a "painful memory" that involves the death of a childhood friend and how the "traumatic experience" brought the Danver sisters together closer than they had ever been before. The 'Midvale' trailer (which you can watch above) offers a sneak peek at some of the episode's flashbacks, including one moment (see the "big reveal" at the end) that raises far more questions than it answers.

Izabela Vidovic is playing younger Kara in 'Midvale', taking over the role from Malina Weissman - who played the role in Supergirl's previous flashbacks to Kara and Alex's childhood. Based on the trailer and synopsis, it seems that most of the episode will unfold through flashbacks to the Danver sisters' past, as a means of progressing their season 3 character arcs forward from an emotional perspective.

'Midvale', by the look and sound of it, continues the more dramatic approach that has come to define Supergirl's third season thus far. Indeed, the show hasn't shied away from tackling more emotionally complex and mature topics of late; be it Alex and Maggie accepting that they want different things out of their relationship, Kara and J'onn (David Harewood) reconciling with their respective Kryptonian and Martian spirituality, or Lena (Katie McGrath) wrestling with her personal demons about being a member of the Luthor family. With its fellow Arrowverse TV series The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow both keeping things light-hearted this season, Supergirl should be applauded for trying something different by comparison.

'Midvale' will also serve as the calm before the storm, as far as Supergirl season 3's overarching narrative is concerned. With Samantha (Odette Annable) on the verge of transforming into the Worldkiller Reign any day now, it won't be long before Kara and Alex have their hands full trying to stop the supervillain from wreaking havoc on National City and planet Earth at large. Fortunately, the pair will be getting a helping hand in the battle to come from a team of time-traveling superheroes (no, not that team of time-traveling superheroes) known as the Legion of Super-Heroes - a crew that includes Jesse Rath's Brainiac 5 and Amy Jackson's Saturn Girl, among others.
