With four seasons under its cape, CW’s Supergirl has proven to be one of the more popular offshoots of the Arrowverse as it’s been renewed for a fifth season.  Based on the DC heroine of the same name, the show tells the story of Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who also escaped the destruction of their home-planet Krypton but arrived on Earth much later than Superman.

Though she has fought many super-villains thus far, with many of them being based on comic-book counterparts, let us speculate on what villains we’d like to see in the next season.

Cassandra Cain

Cassandra Cain trains with a sword in DC comics

The daughter of notorious assassin David Cain, Cassandra was raised without being taught how to speak causing her to become mute and read people through body language.  The idea was that this would make her the perfect assassin, but instead she was taken under Batman’s wing and became the second incarnation of Batgirl after Barbara Gordon was paralyzed following the events in Alan Moore's The Killing Joke graphic-novel.

But Cassandra became evil later on and wound up fighting Supergirl (though this was eventually reversed due to the controversy it caused among the comic-book fans).  Still, if done right, Cassandra could make for an interesting antihero in the Supergirl show despite being confirmed to appear in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie.

Gaius Marcus/Buzz

Originally born in Ancient Rome, Gaius Marcus made a deal with the demon Beelzebub to allow an assassination attempt on Emperor Caligula’s life to succeed in exchange that his wife Valeria would live after she was taken by Caligula.  However, a distressed Valeria killed Gaius thus binding his soul to Beelzebub’s which transformed him into a demon slave.

Now known as Buzz, Gaius instigated several atrocities in history and even manipulated a young Linda Danvers (one of Supergirl's civilian identities) before she merged with a being called Matrix, who was the original Supergirl.  Though Buzz is a minor villain at best, his menacing presence would certainly make Kara’s life more interesting.

Lesla-Lar

Lesla-Lar using her scientific equipment in Action Comics.

Hailing from the wacky Silver Age of DC comics, Lesla-Lar was Kara’s counterpart from an alternate universe who was brought to the city of Kandor (which was the capital city of Krypton before Brainiac stole it and bottled it up).  Because Lesla-Lar was jealous of Supergirl, she invented a device that sapped Supergirl’s powers and temporarily switched places with her even managing to fool Superman.

Given DC’s tendency to reboot characters right and left every few decades, it’s amazing that this character has not had a proper revival yet.  So why not have Lesla-Lar revived for the next season of Supergirl?

Superwoman (Lucy Lane Version)

DC Superwoman Supergirl Lucy Lane

Though several characters in the DC comic-book universe share the name of Superwoman, including an evil version of Lois Lane who has similar powers to Wonder Woman, there is one version that could serve as an interesting villain for Supergirl.

Prior to the New 52 comic-book line, Lois Lane’s sister Lucy was given a suit that gave her Kryptonian abilities and manipulated into committing crimes for General Sam Lane leading to Supergirl confronting her.  Now given that both Lucy and Sam Lane are part of the Supergirl show already, it wouldn’t be a stretch to incorporate this storyline into the fifth season.

Emerald Empress

Suicide Squad Justice League Emerald Empress

Existing in the Thirtieth Century during the Legion of Super-Heroes’ time, this super-villainess is known primarily for possessing a powerful item called the Emerald Eye of Ekron which can shoot energy blasts.  It can also give the Empress powers such as flight and the ability to survive in space.

While this character is portrayed as unsympathetically evil, there are versions of her that imply she’s under the influence of the Eye itself and not in control of her actions (much like DC’s Enchantress who appeared in the movie Suicide Squad).  Thus, she could be a compelling opponent for Supergirl and it wouldn’t be hard to include her since the Legion of Super-Heroes have appeared in the Supergirl show before.

Kryptonite Man (Clay Ramsay Version)

As his name implies, this super-villain’s origin primarily involves him being exposed to Kryptonite (the crystal-like substance that serves as Superman’s primary weakness) which gave him powers that could rival Superman.  Though different versions of Kryptonite Man exist in the comics, the New 52 version was an ordinary man named Clay Ramsay who became part of a super soldier-type experiment called Project K-Man which was part of a scheme concocted by Lex Luthor.

This version also agreed to work for General Sam Lane, who hoped to use Kryptonite Man to keep Superman in check.  So it wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea to have Kryptonite Man confront Supergirl since Sam Lane and Lex Luthor are reoccurring villains within the Supergirl show.

Galatea

Galatea versus Supergirl in Justice League Unlimited

Originally debuting in Justice League Unlimited, which was a sequel to the beloved Justice League animated series that ran in the early 2000s, Galatea was an evil clone of Supergirl created by a government project to deal with the Justice League in case they went rogue.  Though she is an original character, her design and powers were strongly influenced by Power Girl (a cousin of Superman’s from another universe who got stranded in DC’s main universe following the incredibly complicated Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline).

But what made Galatea unique from Power Girl was her mental connection with Supergirl, which made their animosity more personal.  Thus, it would be interesting to see a revision of her for the Supergirl show given the popularity of other characters that debuted in cartoon series first such as Harley Quinn and Livewire.

H’El

Introduced in the New 52 comic-book line, this guy was a Kryptonian clone implanted with false memories that was sent away from Krypton prior to its destruction for the sake of testing a prototype rocket created by Superman’s father Jor-El.  But due to getting sidetracked, he ended up on Earth many years after Superman arrived and sought out a means to return to Krypton before it could be destroyed.

However, he ended up fighting both Superman and Supergirl when he threatened to kill Superboy whom he saw as an abomination due to Superboy’s heritage of being a human/Kryptonian hybrid clone of Superman.  Though Superboy hasn’t shown up in Supergirl yet, it would be interesting to see someone as formidable as H’El take on the Girl of Steel.

Mongul

One of the few DC villains that can go toe-to-toe with Superman, Mongul is the ruthless leader of an artificial planet called Warworld where he summons warriors from across the universe to participate in a series of gladiatorial games for the entertainment of his people (though this was a retcon of his origin following Crisis on Infinite Earths).

In a famous storyline, Superman is brought to Warworld and manages to overthrow Mongul with help from a champion gladiator named Draaga.  Now, what if this story was retold but instead of Superman it is Supergirl who gets summoned? That would make for an interesting story-arc in the next season of Supergirl.

Darkseid

Darkseid DC Comics

Essentially the DC equivalent to Thanos, Darkseid’s immense power and intimidating nature have no bounds.  After all, he not only rules over his own planet with an iron fist but is also a member of the New Gods who utilize advanced technology that is beyond human comprehension.  In fact, there is even a storyline where he kidnaps Supergirl and brainwashes her into fighting against Superman and Batman.

Despite the fact that his presence has been teased in the DC Extended Universe, it’s unknown whether he’s actually going to show up in any of the future DC films or not.  Still, he could show up in the next season of Supergirl given the connection he has to the eponymous heroine in the comic-books.
