Starring cast member of The CW's Supergirl, David Harewood, has expressed interest in returning to the role in the future after the upcoming series finale. In January 2020, many of The CW's various shows were renewed for further seasons, including Supergirl, which went on to begin production on its sixth season. However, in September of the same year, the season was announced to be the show's final one, with many of the series' cast and crew sharing their thoughts and thanks for the show's six years on the air.

The sixth and final season eventually premiered on March 30, 2021 with returning cast members Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair, and David Harewood all reprising their roles from the previous five seasons. Original cast members who have previously departed from the series have also been announced to reprise their roles in some capacity, including Mechad Brooks as James Olsen, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, and Chris Wood as Mon-El. Supergirl's season 6 plot sees Kara and her team go up against one of their biggest threats yet in the form of inter-dimensional imp, Nxyly, who has teamed up with Lex Luthor to destroy the entire world as revenge for her imprisonment in the Phantom Zone.

Ahead of the series finale's debut, Harewood sent out a message on Twitter to his followers about his role as Martian Manhunter and the character's future. Within the heartfelt message, he reminisced on his opportunity to showcase the character to audiences for the past six years. He then thanked the show's viewers for their good wishes and expressed his own personal interest in possibly suiting up as the Martian Manhunter once again in the future. Harewood also received mountains of replies from fans who expressed their own sadness at the show's ending. Check out his post below:

With many of the Arrowverse shows suddenly coming to an end, especially over the past two years, Harewood is not the first actor to express interest in reprising his role at a later point in the franchise. Some of the original franchise actors, such as Arrow's Stephen Amell and Katie Cassidy have both spoken on returning to their roles as Oliver Queen and Laurel Lance in a possible revival or even in an appearance on Legends of Tomorrow. Other Arrow actors have already made their returns after the show's conclusion, with David Ramsey appearing across multiple Arrowverse shows and Katherine McNamara returning the upcoming "Armageddon" crossover.

With Harewood confirming his interest in reprising the role of Martian Manhunter in the future, that only makes it that much more possible for him to do so. Not only does it open the possibility of Harewood's iconic character returning, but also pushes the possibility for other characters seemingly left behind in the Arrowverse to make their long-awaited returns to upcoming seasons, shows, and episodes. Audiences will have to wait and see the future of the Martian Manhunter after Supergirl draws to a close.
