Season 2 of Supergirl has gotten off to a super start. Last week's episode saw the official introduction of Kara's cousin, Clark Kent, aka Superman (played by Tyler Hoechlin), and the two wasted no time teaming up to prevent a catastrophe. At the end of the episode, Clark indicated he would stick around National City for a bit, as he enjoyed spending time with his cousin, and was hoping to get some more firsthand stories of Krypton. And it is a good thing, because it looks like National City will need all the help it can get.

After Supergirl and her cousin foiled his attempt to murder Lena Luthor, John Corben found himself in the hands of Cadmus, where he will be turned into frequent Superman antagonist, Metallo. Promos for 'The Last Children of Krypton' have teased this encounter, hinting that things might not go to well for Supergirl when she does battle with the Kryptonite-powered villain. Additionally, the episode has teased that fans will at some point see Superman holding an unconscious Supergirl in a pose straight from the 1980s DC Comics crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths.

It was confirmed last week that this scene is indeed a nod to Crisis on Infinite Earths, and now, The CW (via CBR) has released a new promotional image (below) in homage to George Perez’s iconic Crisis on Infinite Earths cover.

The issue to which the above promotional image pays homage featured the death of Supergirl -- something that you can bet will not happen tonight. Still, with the two Kryptonians going against Metallo, they will no doubt have their hands full, and it appears that Supergirl will feel the brunt of their first encounter. As indicated in the episode's official synopsis, Superman will largely blame Hank for Supergirl's injuries, as the Kryptonite used to power Metallo was stolen from the DEO.

Tension between Superman and J'onn J'onzz was teased last week, as Clark blames the latter for not destroying all the Kryptonite when he had the chance. And it is possible this tension is what leads Superman to return to Metropolis, as Hoechlin is only slated to appear in the first two episodes of the season. Of course, with his take on Clark Kent/Superman being well received, it is possible that he guests later in the season.

Supergirl continues tonight with ‘The Last Children of Krypton’ @8pm on The CW.
