The first season of Supergirl debuted last fall on CBS and followed Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), a Kryptonian who landed on Earth as a child and grew up to don a cape and become the Girl of Steel. Throughout its first season, Supergirl introduced a number of aliens, including Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), and even visited Krypton through Kara's memories. However, the Supergirl season 1 finale teased the arrival of another alien being when a pod that seemed to be from the distant planet crash landed on Earth.
During the summer hiatus between seasons, much of the discussion surrounding Supergirl has shifted to its move from CBS to The CW - where Kara will be included in a four-show crossover as well as a musical crossover in the upcoming season - and the casting of Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman, Kara's Kryptonian cousin. Now, however, we know of another superpowered alien joining the show in its second season.
During The CW's presentation at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, Supergirl producers confirmed previously cast Chris Wood (Containment) will play Mon-El in season 2. Wood's casting was announced earlier this summer and, though his role was kept under wraps at the time, it was revealed during Comic-Con International in San Diego that he would be playing the character who landed on Earth in the pod.
Unlike Supergirl and Superman, Mon-El isn't Kryptonian, but rather Draxamite - a species of alien that possesses many of the same powers as the Kryptonians on Earth but has a weakness to lead instead of Kryptonite. There have been a number of versions of Mon-El throughout the DC Comics history and the character has ties to the Legion of Super-Heroes. Considering a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring was spotted first on The Flash, then again on Supergirl in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, it's possible we'll be seeing some form of this superhero team on The CW.
The network's DC Comics series won't be a stranger to superhero team-ups this season since the Justice Society of America is being officially introduced on Legends of Tomorrow season 2 - after being teased in the season 1 finale. Plus, the series is also welcoming the Legion of Doom. Elsewhere in The CW's DC Comics television universe, The Flash is tackling well-known comics storyline Flashpoint and Arrow will be getting back to its roots in street-level crime. So, The CW has plenty of exciting DC Comics characters and storylines set to be explored during this upcoming television season.
That said, it remains to be seen how exactly Mon-El will factor into Supergirl season 2. Hoechlin's Superman will make his first appearance in the season 2 premiere, so it may be the case that Kara consults her cousin on what to do about the pod and Mon-El. It's likely we'll learn more about Wood's character once the season 2 premiere draws closer.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
