Warning! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1031!

In Action Comics #1031, Supergirl's presence is welcomed as she showcases her knowledge of Kryptonian history. In this issue, Superman and Superboy find a group of Kryptonian refugees from Warworld. Superman and Supergirl believe that they could be actual Kryptonians, but Superboy is sure something is wrong. One particular refugee is singled out as a point of interest as she bears the symbol of the House of El. Additionally, she utters a sentence in an old Kryptonian language. Are the supers being tricked? Where are the refugees from and why did they come? These are just a few of the questions that readers are left asking.

With answers needed, Kara Zor-El comes into the fold. Digging into the known records of those who escaped Krypton, Supergirl believes they have to look further back in time. However, Jonathan sees it as a waste of time as the refugees don't have many of the key signifiers of normal Kryptonians. He believes they aren't real Kryptonians as their cells don't react to the sun's radiation, they are powerless. This starts a mini confrontation between Kara, who is very rational, and Jonathan who is irrational in thinking. Jonathon fears that Superman is being set up.

In Action Comics #1031 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Daniel Sampere, and Jordie Bellaire, Supergirl demonstrates her importance. This happens as Kara reveals that she understands the language the refugee spoke in. It's inferred that Jonathan and everyone else, barring Superman, thought it was just normal Kryptonian. But it turns out to be a long-extinct language from old Krypton, which Kara somehow understands. The dead language is called Falkiri, which no one else had ever heard of. Half of the Kryptonians wouldn't even understand it as it hasn't been used in thousands of years. This brings up the possibility of them being time travelers, but Supergirl dismisses this as the refugee mentions Thalkis, a Kryptonian scientist known to the heroes.

Supergirl continues to prove her knowledge as she tells of Thalkis' deeds as a scientist. Drawing parallels to Socrates and Galileo to explain that Thalkis was somehow who was admired for her devotion "to what she thought was the truth." Just as she reveals this, Jonathan goes berserk as he is consumed with fear that they are being played by the villain Mongul. Scared for his father's life, he believes that there is a greater conspiracy happening. And that Superman is being lured in to get captured and probably killed. This expands his anxieties of Superman's impending death to a whole other level.

Ultimately, Jonathan is right to be wary of the supposed Kryptonian refugees. However, Supergirl's brief appearance further justifies her feelings about Superboy in Future State. The reason that she left Earth was that she was tired of living in Superman's shadow, but also because of Jonathan and his actions. In this issue, Jonathan's actions showcase this dismissal of Supergirl's contributions. As a reader, it puts fans into the same boat as Supergirl as quite clearly Jonathan is acting irrationally. Nevertheless, Supergirl's wisdom is evident and extremely valuable as she gives greater insight into Kryptonian history. Action Comics #1031 is available in comic book shops and on digital platforms now.
