The CW's Supergirl is entering its final season and no doubt there will be a number of shocking narrative twists in store for the huge conclusion to the DC Comics TV show. A number of betrayals have taken place across its five seasons thus far, with each resulting in a game changing shift for the characters and the status quo.

Of course, while some of these betrayals created deep personal wounds, others resulted in large conflicts that could only be solved with the comic book tradition of superpowers and capes. There are plenty of significant moments from Supergirl to analyze when looking at these themes of betrayal, especially when concerning the emotional connections of friendship, family, and romance.

Mon-El And Supergirl

Mon-El and Supergirl seemed like the perfect couple, but their time together was cut far too short. In fact, the end of their relationship was essentially the result of both of their betrayals. For Kara, it was the choice to create an atmosphere so toxic on Earth that Mon-El could no longer stay.

She quite literally pushed him away, rather than finding another way around the problems she was facing. Mon-El in turn went to the future and rather than finding a way back first, he instead marries Saturn Girl, before he returned to Earth safely again. Both of these romantic betrayals ultimately cost them their potential future together.

Lex Luthor To Everyone

Lex Luthor's many betrayals cannot be ranked too highly as they are just so predictable. In fact, Lex Luthor has turned on more people than he can probably keep count of. There's so many across his history that it's difficult to know where to begin.

The ones that perhaps sting the most though are those betrayals that impacted his own family. Lena Luthor especially felt the brunt of many of his actions, although it's also fair to say that perhaps Luthor's biggest betrayal was his bid to rewrite reality during the Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Eve Teschmacher To Lena Luthor

Speaking of the Luthors, one of the most significant betrayals also involved Eve Teschmacher. For years Eve had worked closely with Lena, with the sister to Lex even believing the two were friends. A much more sinister plot was at play though.

Eve was revealed to have been working with Lex the whole time though, that is until another shadowy organization emerged taking credit for Eve's manipulation. Either way, Lena's trust was broken down even further as she continued to lose everyone in her life.

Winslow Schott Sr. To His Family

Supergirl has perhaps contributed the most to the Arrowverse in terms of opening up the universe further. Its ability to include alien planets, new villains, and even futuristic teams like the Legion Of Superheroes, have all resulted in an even more comic accurate small screen experience.

The Schott family is one such example of this, with Winn eventually joining the Legion as Computer Lad and Toyman. Of course, the betrayal here is that of Winslow Schott Sr. who claimed the Toyman name to begin with and became a murderous villain in turn crumbling his own family.

Sam Arias To Team Supergirl

Sam Arias may not have known that she was going to be at the center of one of Supergirl's most difficult fights, but unfortunately, Kara's so-called friend turned out to be the Kryptonian villain Reign. This was a foe unlike any Kara had faced before.

This betrayal was quite a twist for the show, although once the dust had settled and Reign and the World Enders had been defeated, Sam and Kara could resume their friendship again with the assumption that the villain could no longer emerge.

The Waynes To The Els

The Waynes and the Els have remained firm friends throughout the years. The partnership of Superman and Batman, Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, is legendary. Kate Kane and Kara had also formed a similar bond in recent times.

The fact that the Wayne family had held on to pieces of Kryptonite though was quite the personal betrayal for Kara, who felt she was vulnerable to the family of vigilantes. She ultimately trusted Kate to look after the sample, although a Bruce Wayne from another reality had already betrayed the Els for good.

Supergirl To Lena Luthor

As her fights continued to stack up and her losses to their toll, Supergirl became more guarded and far less optimistic than she had historically been. She hid the truth of her identity from Lena Luthor, partially out of fear for the Luthor name and also to protect the scientist.

This betrayal ultimately came back to bite her and there were huge repercussions from locking away these huge secrets from one of her supposed best friends. It took a lot for the two to finally mend their friendship, including the chaotic work of the Imp Mxy.

In retaliation for Kara's own decisions, Lena made a number of shocking choices that only weakened the alliance between the Luthor and the Zor-El. In fact, Lena almost became the villain of the show thanks to some of her more suspicious plans.

Lena thought she could make the world a safer place by eliminating the negative emotions within humanity. It was a plan that could never really work though and as Kara put an end to her plans she came to realize the mistakes she had made, growing once more as a character.

The United States To Supergirl

Supergirl had been a beacon of hope and heroism for America for a long time. Yet, once Agent Liberty and his 'children' started to storm the streets, the country turned on both Kara and the rest of the alien population. Indeed, these episodes were perhaps amongst the best, dealing with significant political issues.

The American people betrayed Supergirl, turning their back on both her and everything she stood for. Nonetheless, she never gave in and there appears to be a more harmonious relationship once again between Earth and visitors to the planet.

Malefic J'onzz To His Family

The fact that the Martian Manhunter had a brother was shocking enough. What was more appalling was both the Martian's treatment of Malefic and in turn his own betrayal and treason against his people, ultimately in aid of the White Martians.

Malefic even ventured to Earth, hunting down his brother in order to kill him. He would eventually see the error of his ways and any hatred was absorbed by the love of a family once more. However, this was perhaps one of the most significant betrayals in the history of the show thanks to the impact the destruction of Mars had on one of the series' lead characters.
