Supergirl has never been strictly a story of heroic deeds and fighting off villains, with the show taking an equal interest in Kara Danvers' "normal" life as a sister, friend, girlfriend, and aspiring journalist. When the show returns after a spring hiatus on April 24, episode 'Ace Reporter' will focus on the increasingly BFF relationship between Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), as well as introduce a potential new enemy for Supergirl.

The official synopsis for 'Ace Reporter' revealed that iZombie star Rahul Kohli would appear as Lena's ex Jack Spheer, a genius set to unveil a nano-technology invention with the potential power to eradicate all disease. Though she attends the event with Lena merely for moral support, Kara's journalistic instincts kick in when she sees her old boss, Snapper Car (Ian Gomez). Her intense questioning of Jack's discovery leads to even deeper digging that "puts everyone in danger," and possibly threatens her relationship with Lena.

The trailer for the episode seemed to indicate that Spheer may have committed murder, which led many viewers to assume that Supergirl would be following Spheer's DC Comics trajectory and transforming him into villain Biomax. Now the latest images from The CW, which you can view below, show Spheer at his tech conference, introducing his invention as "Biomax."

In the comics, the "Biomax Process" was a plasma that could control organic tissue. In a fight with his son, Green Arrow, and Black Canary, Spheer was accidentally pushed into a vat of the plasma. He reemerged with that same power to control organic tissue -- namely the minds of others. It's possible that Supergirl may include a similar type of accident with Spheer's nano-tech. Another angle from the comics was that the tech wizard's invention was actually causing harm rather than helping.

The new images show Kara and Snapper in action as reporters at the conference, as well as Kara and Mon-El (Chris Wood) interacting with Spheer and Lena socially. With Lena seemingly charmed into possibly rekindling a romance with her ex, Kara's investigation could put a strain on what Benoist has called "a special bond" between the two women. Hopefully the faith Kara has shown in Lena's good intentions in the past will earn the same trust from Lena in return, and the two can work together to fight off whatever danger Spheer and Biomax present.

Supergirl returns Monday, April 24 with ‘Ace Reporter’ at 8pm on The CW.
