They say the only constant is change, and nothing could be truer for DC's newest Young Justice comic series. Thrown into total disarray across the multiverse from the very start, it seemed like the heroes were finally close to making their way back home. But now that Tim Drake has taken a new identity, it looks like Superboy Conner Kent may be doing the same, with DC teasing his rebirth as DC's medieval warrior king, Warlord.
There's a good chance that Young Justice's younger readers will be unfamiliar with Warlord, or the world created by Mike Grell in 1975. Set in the mythical world of Skartaris (contained inside Earth), the comic followed pilot Travis Morgan as he stumbled into the realm, and became the helmeted, sword-wielding hero dubbed The Warlord. When Superboy was lured into a reality-crossing transporter in Young Justice #11, he ended up crashing into the dirt at Warlord's feet. There he has stayed, dejected and defeated. And according to DC's official preview pages for Young Justice #13, that's where he remains. Which means it will have to be the Warlord who pulls him out of his funk -- and judging by the cover art, pass on the mantle of Warlord to Conner, whether literally or figuratively.
His friends will be just fine back home, especially now that they've got DC's own Spider-Man on the team (yes, really). As for Conner? Artist John Timms is joined by Grell himself, as the Warlord starts his story from the beginning, to see if he can offer the counsel Superboy so desperately needs in the preview pages below:
For the rest of the story, readers will have to pick up the full issue when it arrives on February 5th. But thanks to the cover art by Timms, readers won't need to wait until then to start speculating about the passing of Warlord's wardrobe and weapons to young Conner. He's going to return to Earth, and not stay to protect order in Skartaris... right?
