Super Troopers director Jay Chandrasekhar shares some information about the development status of Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers. Released in 2001, the original Super Troopers was developed by the comedy team Broken Lizard - of which Chandrasekhar is a founding member - and became a surprise hit on a minuscule budget. In the following years, Broken Lizard released several different comedy projects, including Super Troopers 2.

Super Troopers 2 was released in 2018 to a lukewarm response from audiences, receiving a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes in comparison to the original's impressive 90%. Given the less than stellar reception and the fact that Broken Lizard has been developing multiple different projects in the time since, the likelihood of a third film has been somewhat in doubt. While the comedy team did announce that Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers was in the works shortly after the second film's release, the fact that it has not gone into development after four years raised doubts in the minds of some fans.

However, in a recent interview with Collider, Chandrasekhar reassured audiences that the third Super Troopers film is still very much on the minds of the Broken Lizard team. The director said that, while the comedy troupe has been working on multiple other projects, the script for Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers is still in the works. He assured that the film is "going to happen" before giving fans some insight into Broken Lizard's writing process for their films and why Super Troopers 3 has not gone into production yet. See what he had to say below:

"We have written draft seven and so when we get to about draft twenty, we'll start the machine up. […] I mean, we wrote thirty-two drafts of ‘Super Troopers 1’, and we wrote thirty drafts of ‘Super Troopers 2’. It's just our process."

Broken Lizard Super Troopers 2

While it may be disappointing for some to hear that the third film in the Super Troopers saga is still a ways off, fans of Broken Lizard have more projects to look forward to from the comedy troupe than ever before. In December, their comedic take on The Hunchback of Notredame, Quasi, will be streaming on Hulu. Chandrasekhar will star in the film as the King of France. The project will be directed by fellow Broken Lizard member Kevin Heffernan, who plays the obnoxious Rod Farva in the Super Troopers series. The fourth season of Tacoma FD, another Broken Lizard project, is also eyeing a release this winter.

Despite the fact that Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers will not be releasing for some time, the success of Broken Lizard cannot be overstated. After making the original Super Troopers on a budget of $3 million that improbably grossed over $20 million at the box office, the comedy team has parlayed that success into a massive cult following and multiple different films and TV shows. Chandrasekhar and his colleagues clearly care about taking the time to get the script for the third film in their flagship series right. Fans will just have to be patient and hold out to see what Broken Lizard has in store for the threequel.
