Warning! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1030

In the latest issue of DC's Action Comics, Superman is potentially dying and Clark Kent's time in the DC Universe may be coming to an end, motivating the Super Sons, Robin and Superboy, to reunite. Superman's son Jon is back from the future with the Legion of Super-Heroes and he's naturally concerned, not just with the fact that his dad may be nearing the end, but also the fact that he doesn't feel ready to become the next Superman. Thankfully, Jon has Robin to encourage and set him straight as only Damian Wayne can.

In Action Comics #1030 from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Daniel Sampere, Superman has Batman and Atom monitoring and running tests on his body after his encounter with the recent breach of alien creatures that nearly killed him. While Atom doesn't seem all that worried, Batman disagrees, fearing that the level of cellular decay he's seeing within Superman is consistent with radiation poisoning. While it's still too early to tell, Batman recommends that Superman talk to his son about joining the Justice League...just in case.

Meanwhile, Jon's concern lies in what's he's read and seen in the future, and he's met up with his best friend Robin to talk it through, finally reuniting the Super Sons for lunch after his time away. Apparently, Superman's conflict with the breach was the last recorded event the future held, leaving Superman's present very much uncertain. As such, Jon is worried about Superman dying or disappearing soon, leaving him alone and expected to become the next Superman in his dad's place, a role which he doesn't feel ready for at all. However, Damian Wayne does what he does best, telling the son of Superman the straight truth regardless of Jon's feelings.

Despite his brusqueness, Damian makes a solid point: Jon is destined to become the next Superman whether he likes it or not, though it will be his choice to determine what kind of Superman he's going to be when the time does eventually come. In any case, Damian doesn't want to talk about his current estrangement with his father, though fans certainly know that he probably should considering the new path he's taken in his new Robin series from Joshua Williamson and Gelb Melnikov. At least he knows that Jon is always there for him when/if Damian ever decides to open up.

While things certainly aren't looking good for Superman after this issue (especially with the arrival of new Kryptonians as Jon feared), the Super Sons getting back together even for a short time is pretty cool, as it's a relationship many DC fans love. The pause on their friendship was certainly the worst thing about Jon heading to the future, so it's good to see Superboy reconnecting with Robin now that he's back in the present DC Universe, even if it was just for venting over lunch.
