A new rumor suggests that the recently announced Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo Switch "heavily" features third parties. If true, a greater number of guest characters opens the doors for players to see some of their favorite characters from other companies finally get some love in Nintendo's flagship fighting game. The last game featured Sonic the Hedgehog, Megaman, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Ryu from Street Fighter, and more.

With the Nintendo Switch breaking record after record to become the fastest-selling console in U.S. history, it's no surprise that Nintendo would want Super Smash Bros.—one of their most successful franchises—to have a home on the Switch. Each game in the franchise has been met with critical success since its launch in 1999 on the Nintendo 64. The latest installment, 2014's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS was another major success.

Video game journalist Marcus Sellars claims to have insider information on the upcoming game. According to Sellars, third party characters will be "heavily represented" in the new Super Smash Bros. He also says that the game will feature a story mode designed for two-player co-op play. Sellars claims that the game will also see the return of the Ice Climbers. The Ice Climbers were cut from the last installment due to issues with gameplay mechanics on the 3DS.

Of course, the rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. We don't know much about the new title, or even if it's a brand new game, and not just a port of the Wii U version. However, we do know that the game will include at least some new characters. Based on what was seen in the teaser trailer that came with the announcement, the new Super Smash Bros. will include Breath of the Wild's Link and the Inklings from the popular Wii U title, Splatoon.

Fans will have a lot to speculate about if the rumor is true. The addition of numerous third parties could provide even more excitement for fans hoping that Dragon Ball's Goku or Rare's Banjo and Kazooie finally make it to Super Smash Bros. It's also possible that Nintendo may be able to include more than just one character from another company. For example, in the last two installments, fans have been able to play as Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog, but if more guest characters are on the table, players could also see other Sonic characters like Knuckles or Shadow the Hedgehog enter the fray for the first time.
