Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Reveals New Fighters - Including King K. Rool

Nintendo has unveiled five new characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including the highly requested Donkey Kong Country villain King K. Rool and Castlevania's Simon Belmont, who has been rumored for months.

At E3 2018, Nintendo officially revealed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will include every fighter in the history of the series. It was also confirmed that Metroid's Ridley, Princess Daisy, and the Inklings will be joining the fight as well, brining the character count to an impressive 68. Players will begin with an extremely small roster, and will have to gradually unlock the rest. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai explained that due to the sheer number of fighters featured in the game, fans shouldn't expect "too many new challengers".

During a Nintendo Direct video presentation centered on the game, Sakurai announced that five new characters would be joining the roster, including King K. Rool, Simon Belmont, Richter Belmont, Dark Samus, and Chrom, one of the three protagonists of Fire Emblem: Awakening. Richter is the descendant of Simon, and will serve as his ancestor's Echo fighter.

Introduced at E3, Echo fighters are characters who possess the same movesets as another character, but have different designs. Dark Samus and Chrom will be the Echo fighters of Metroid's Samus and Fire Emblem's Roy respectively. In the game, King K. Rool will use a blunderbuss that fires cannonballs, and can throw his crown like a boomerang, an attack that the King of the Kremlings used in the final boss stage in Donkey Kong Country. Simon Belmont's gameplay relies heavily on his signature weapon the whip, though the vampire hunter can also utilize other weapons, such as the cross, holy water, and the axe.

On top of the new characters, the Nintendo Direct presentation also dropped details for new and returning modes and announced that the game will include an unprecedented number of 103 stages.

The biggest surprise from the presentation was the reveal of King K. Rool. Since the second Smash installment, Melee, the series has only featured two Donkey Kong characters. For years, fans have been requesting that Super Smash Bros. give more representation to the Donkey Kong franchise. In adding King K. Rool, Nintendo has more than delivered, as this fighter in particular is one of the most fan-requested characters in Smash history.
