Rumors of Doom series protagonist Doomguy's addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster have been strengthened by a recent copyright strike. Since the game's launch in 2018, Smash Bros. Ultimate's already-impressive roster of characters has grown through the release of downloadable content. One of the characters most heavily rumored is Doomguy, also known as The Doom Slayer, the protagonist of the highly influential first-person shooter series Doom.
After the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, developer Nintendo has continued to evolve the game through the steady release of new playable characters. The game's two Fighter Passes have added video game icons such as Minecraft's Steve, Banjo-Kazooie's titular protagonists and Final Fantasy VII antagonist Sephiroth. The game's last character release, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Pyra and Mythra, were released back in early March. With two more characters waiting to be revealed from Fighter Pass 2, it seems more than likely that the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character will be revealed during E3 2021.
A report from Dexerto reveals that a copyright strike on Twitter may hint towards Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's next DLC fighter. Twitter user XonKeD claims to have posted a Doom Eternal television ad with the Smash Bros. Ultimate song "LifeLight" playing over it. The video was then taken down due to a copyright strike from Nintendo, suggesting that the company may be trying to preserve the reveal of the game's next character. While copyright strikes are not rare, especially where Nintendo is concerned, the claim does give additional support to the already-rumored addition of Doomguy. Dexerto also provides other information that may hint towards the character's addition to Smash, such as the fact that Doom Eternal game director Marty Stratton reached out to Nintendo for a crossover back in 2020.
Doomguy's unique skillset and important place in video game history makes him a shoe-in for inclusion in Smash, but many players have alternate suggestions. Crash Bandicoot, the titular star of the platformer franchise which began in 1996, has been one of the most frequently requested additions to the game's roster. Even Lou Studdert, Creative Producer on 2020's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, recently stated a desire to see Crash compete in the crossover tournament. The original Crash Bandicoot games are often considered Sony's answer to Nintendo's Mario platformers, so the inclusion would be appropriate. Other popular suggestions for the final two Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters include Waluigi, Sonic the Hedgehog antagonist Dr. Eggman and Spyro the Dragon.
It has been three months since the release of the last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter, so fans are very eager to hear about the next addition to the game's growing roster. The Doom Slayer is a very exciting choice, since the first-person shooter hero would stand out amongst the game's roster of primarily melee-focused characters. With a place in video game history dating back to 1993, Doom's protagonist would also be a perfect love letter to the industry's past.
