Nintendo has released a short teaser showing off a few new games and updates coming to the Switch this summer, and it implies that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's next DLC character might be coming as early as this month. Erdrick (or "The Hero" as he will be called in Smash) hails from the Dragon Quest series, and was announced at E3 2019 as the next playable fighter coming to the game.
Ever since dataminers dug into Smash Ultimate's source code and unearthed evidence pointing to a Dragon Quest rep earlier this year, the fanbase had been hyping up the reveal of the character and theorizing about their moves and outfits. Further evidence later surfaced when the game supervisor of Smash Ultimate posted photos referencing Dragon Quest. Finally, during Nintendo's E3 2019 Direct, it was confirmed that both Erdrick and the highly requested Banjo-Kazooie would be joining the roster as Smash Ultimate's third and fourth DLC fighters, respectively.
In the brief video posted to Nintendo's YouTube channel, there are teases for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, season 9 of Fortnite, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. All three of these are scheduled for release this month. What's curious is that there are also clips of Erdrick's announcement trailer from E3, accompanied by a tag that reads "Fighters Pass: Hero Joins the Battle". While Erdrick doesn't technically have a release date yet, he is slated to come out in "summer 2019." The obvious interpretation of this by many fans is that Erdrick could be added to Smash Ultimate by the end of July.
However, Nintendo has since changed the title of the video from "Fan-Favorites and Newest Releases - July" to "Fan-Favorites and Newest Releases - Summer". It's not entirely clear why the title was changed, but it is possible that it either gave too much away or simply wasn't an accurate time frame. Some commenters have suggested that the title was just a mistake in the first place, but this doesn't seem very likely considering the other games shown in the video.
Smash players are always hungry for new information on the game, and have been able to glean information and ideas from the smallest sources in the past. This just underscores the undying popularity of Smash Ultimate, and how exciting any new details can be for one of the most massive cross-over games ever made. The game's developers like to keep things surprising, however, so we probably won't find out anything more about Erdrick until he arrives. The final two DLC characters are still a mystery as well, but it surely won't be long before a leak, datamine, or hint sets off another storm of hype and speculation about them.
