Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has doubled down on the insistence that the next character to be revealed in the second fighters pass will be the last character to be added in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This declaration was reinforced weeks after the recent release of Kazuya from Tekken in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Character reveals for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have sometimes been laced with controversy Most infamously, Byleth caused quite a stir when they were revealed as the last fighter for the first Fighters Pass. Many fans disliked the Youtube presentation where Sakurai showcased Byleth in action. And while not as major as Byleth, there was also a stink raised over the addition of Pyra/Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for some of the same reasons as Byleth, that being more sword fighter characters.

But regardless of what the reception will be to the last character, Sakurai has reaffirmed in the latest Famitsu column that there will be only one more character remaining for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. According to Source Gaming’s translation of the column, Sakurai said that “This is the end: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be complete.” Sakurai also talks about Kazuya and how he implemented a character from Tekken, a 3D fighting game, into the world of Super Smash Bros.

There are a wide variety of candidates that the last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character could be. There isn't one that's particularly more likely than others, but some of the most popular requests include characters like Crash Bandicoot, Master Chief, Doomguy, and more. The Mii costumes from Kazuya's release did unfortunately axe some of these requests in the Lloyd, Dragonborn, Dante, and Shantae costumes. The final character could also be a Pokémon from Pokémon Sword & Shield, which could cause controversies similar to Byleth. Or perhaps it could be the highly requested Waluigi.

One fact that remains though is that whoever the character will be, they won't be able to please everyone, as there will always be characters that will crop up as popular requests. There will always be a focus on what characters didn't get in just as much as there will be a focus on the actual character. While unfortunate, that is likely how it will turn out for a character with as much pressure as this last one has. The title of the last character is bound to have high expectations simply due to it being the last. All fans can hope for is that this last character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be a crowd pleaser and will bring the massive Nintendo title to a close when they release sometime in 2021.
