If you were able to attend Comic Con in San Diego this past summer then maybe you were fortunate enough to make it into Hall H on Friday to catch the first ever look at James Gunn’s Super.
Until that day, a lot of people had heard of Super, starring Rainn Wilson (The Office) as Crimson Bolt, the powerless superhero who fights with a pipe wrench; but other than the film co-starring Nathan Fillion, Kevin Bacon and Liv Tyler, very little else was known.
Gunn showed the audience two things that day – a complete trailer for Super and an unfinished clip from the film. The trailer hasn’t been released publicly but the we have clip for you to enjoy. While the trailer had everyone in stitches, they weren’t quite prepared for the harsh, in-your-face abruptness of the clip. What starts innocently enough with a bunch of regular people waiting in line for a movie suddenly turns bad when a jerk cuts in line and refuses to leave. What happens next…well, see for yourself.
*Contains NSFW Violence & Language*
Based on this clip and the previously release clip, Super looks like one ultra-violent movie. With this one scene, James Gunn (Slither) has managed to capture the feelings of everyone who has ever had a “skipper” cut in front of them in line. The difference is, most people don’t respond with a pipe wrench to the forehead.
Just like the powerless superhero movies before it, such as Kick Ass and Defendor, Super taps into that gut reaction most people have when they see crime or injustice but are powerless to stop it. While they sometimes wish reaching out and popping someone in the head with a wrench was a viable option, common sense and moral restraint keep them from acting on those feelings of aggression. The Crimson Bolt doesn’t seem to be burdened with those issues.
For a more detailed look at what this movie offers, check out this synopsis of Super:
In Super Frank’s (Rainn Wilson) wife leaves him for a seductive, psychopathic drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), Frank is transformed and the Crimson Bolt is born. With a hand-made suit, a wrench, and a crazed sidekick named Boltie (Ellen Page), the Crimson Bolt beats his way through the mean streets of crime in hopes of saving his wife (Liv Tyler). The rules were written a long time ago: You are not supposed to molest children, cut lines or key cars; if you do, prepare to face the wrath of the Crimson Bolt!
While Super did strike a distribution deal with IFC Films at the Toronto International Film Festival recently, there still isn’t a set release date for the film.
