Thanks to a dedicated group of fans, Super Mario World is now playable on modern widescreen displays. No longer will fans need to go digging up old CRT tube televisions or taking in a black-barred view of the action on current TVs to enjoy this retro video game. Instead, a new ROM is all players need to run the 1990 title on a widescreen monitor.

Super Mario World was the very first Mario game released on SNES, designed to make full use of the newer console’s technical power. Since the early 90s, home entertainment technology has come a long way, with TVs becoming wider and skinnier than in the past. Newer video games make full use of the range of pixels and processing power built into modern TVs, but this does put a strain on more retro games being stretched to fit these dimensions – an issue even Nintendo itself has yet to address.

Most TVs these days are designed to be wider than they are tall, which is different from the old days of CRTs which were more square in shape. Video games released during the older generation of televisions were designed with this kind of shape in mind. The developers at the time would have had no idea how TV technology would change in the future. Super Mario World fans finally have a solution to this issue, with a group of hackers working together to make the retro game playable in both 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions.

The spokesman for the group, Vilela, has stated that they are working on getting 2:1 and 21:9 resolution working for the game as well. This would help retro players who have wider than average screens or monitors to play the game without the use of black bars or overstretching the game’s assets. Some knowledge of emulators and applying patches to ROMs is needed to use this fix. It is also important to note that this is built on the SNES edition of Super Mario World – not the Game Boy Advance or more recent ones.

This is a great development for fans hoping to better enjoy retro games that have been yet to be ported to current generation consoles. Super Mario World is available on the Nintendo Switch, but only to users who have subscribed to Nintendo’s Switch Online service. This version of the game uses big black bars to fit the game onto monitors, players will need to reinstall this ROM in order to enjoy the full-screen experience.
