Once again, Nintendo has released an image that makes Super Mario Sunshine fans think that a sequel is on the way. There have been rumors of a 3D Mario remaster galore throughout this year, with 2020 being Mario's 30th anniversary. Fans have suspected sequels for games like Super Mario 64Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Rumors of a 30th anniversary celebration for Mario also included the reveal of a new Paper Mario game, which did turn out to be true.

Last year, Nintendo stoked fan interest by sharing an image of Mario eating a watermelon on Twitter. This single tweet made fans go wild with speculation, wondering just what this summer image could mean. The text of the tweet included keywords like Odyssey and Sunshine, but fans looked even deeper than that in the actual image, such as the two watermelon seeds on Mario's face. Fans looked for any sort of clues wondering if there was any deeper meaning behind this tweet.

Now, Nintendo has done it again, tweeting out another image of Mario relaxing on the beach, with the text "Stay cool, Mario!" displayed alongside it. Cue the massive amount of of hype from fans looking into every aspect of this image wondering if there's any deeper meaning behind a seemingly ordinary tweet from Nintendo, alongside an equal number of players making fun of the hype.

Some argue that this isn't anything to look into and this is just Nintendo's way of wishing fans a happy summer. There have been other Mario promotions in the past that may or may not point to bigger plans for a 30th anniversary celebration, like Hasbro's recent Jenga and Monopoly Mario games. Others are wondering just what certain details mean in this image, like the second drink having a green straw in it. Is Luigi relaxing along with Mario? However, the greatest mystery of all in this picture is the noticeable lack of Mario edition nipples that were present in Super Mario Odyssey, which sent players into a tizzy in 2017.

Whatever signal Nintendo may be intending to send, the effects of this single image are rippling across social media. Given how big the reception was last year to Mario eating a watermelon, it's possible that Nintendo knows what it's doing when putting out this tweet, aware of the frenzy it will create. Whether or not these signs are anything significant, if this does mean an eventual Super Mario Sunshine sequel or remaster, players are clearly ready for it.
