Koei Tecmo’s president has recently commented on his desire to see a Super Mario Musou-styled game. The Dynasty Warriors series is well known for its hack and slash gameplay against thousands of enemies, and Koei Tecmo’s most recent release on the Switch, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, is currently the most sold Dynasty Warriors styled game to date.

Koei Tecmo has worked on several Dynasty Warrior crossover titles for Nintendo. The first was Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U, and it was such a success that it released again on the 3DS, with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on the Switch being the final version of the original game. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, also released in 2020. Even Fire Emblem has crossed over with the Musou series in Fire Emblem: Warriors. Persona has also recently released a Musou-styled sequel game in Persona 5 Strikers on the PS4, Switch, and PC.

Koei Tecmo’s president, Hisashi Koinuma, recently had an interview with JP games. In it, he was asked what type of Musou crossover he would personally like to see brought to life. His answer was none other than Super Mario, stating that if a series "would work as an action game, then it's definitely possible. While I don’t have any ideas on how to make this a reality, I think Mario would be my pick.”

Mario has seen himself exploring all types of genres within his life. He’s had parties, entered kart races, participated in various sports, had several types of RPG installments, and so much more. But a Dynasty Warriors-styled game would be a first for the plumber. While he’s continuously returned for the next installment in Super Smash Bros., mowing down armies of enemies as the mustachioed plumber would be a new experience for him.

But if Mario and other characters from his series can perform well in Super Smash Bros., then it’s not hard to imagine a Super Mario Warriors game where characters like Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Bowser would ravage the battlefield to take down waves of enemies in all types of flashy ways. Given Koei Tecmo’s previous projects with Nintendo, it’s likely that there would be various elements blended in from Super Mario to compliment the Dynasty Warriors gameplay. If series like The Legend of Zelda, Persona, and Fire Emblem can make it happen, there’s no reason why Super Mario himself wouldn’t be able to have a game where he and his companions fight a war for the Mushroom Kingdom.
