The easiest way to try this trick out is by firing up Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Switch Online NES app, even though it's not needed there, as the game has save states. The trick doesn't work in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, but it's unnecessary, as the game has infinite continues, which is about as merciful as it gets.
