The Super Mario Bros. Movie confirming Yoshi - but not the green one - is actually a massive story hint. Like Mario and Donkey Kong, the friendly, fruit-eating dinosaur is a classic video game icon and a hero who headlines his own series of games. Exactly what presence he'll have in the animated film is unclear, but it's no secret at this point that he'll be involved in Mario's upcoming adventure.

A number of key Mario characters tied to the Mushroom Kingdom have been spotted in the marketing for the 2023 movie. Among them is Yoshi, who made a brief appearance in the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer. In fact, multiple members of his species were seen running together in a herd at a location that may or may not be the movie's take on Yoshi's Island. This depiction of the character is true to the spirit of the games where an untold number of Yoshis populate Mario's world. In the franchise, there's a Yoshi for every major color, but it's the green one that's used as the default, playable version of the character in most Nintendo games.

Where Is The Green Yoshi?

Super Mario Bros Yoshi Herd

Blue, red, black, pink, and yellow Yoshis are included in the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer, but not a single green one is anywhere to be found in the crowd shot. It's theoretically possible that the absence of any green Yoshis in this scene is purely coincidental, but the chance of that are slim. Since the green Yoshi is the most popular and most visible version of the character, it's likely that his exclusion is deliberate, with the green one possibly living elsewhere on the island before being found (or accidentally hatched) during the events of the movie. This approach would make sense, especially if there's a plan for one Yoshi to be utilized as a singular character with a special role in the story.

There are hundreds of Yoshis, which is why creating an identity for one in particular and making them their own character in Mario's new movie could prove challenging. By making green a unique color for the species, The Super Mario Bros. Movie can help distinguish him from the crowd. Providing a sense of individuality to at least one of the Yoshis is perhaps the only way they can be represented as a character, rather than just one of the many species that roams the Mario universe.

Will Mario Ride Yoshi In The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

Yoshi and Mario

Given his history in the franchise, Yoshi has excellent odds of joining the adventure and helping Mario, Princess Peach, and all the rest defeat Bowser at the end of the movie. If that happens, there should be at least one occasion where he gets an opportunity to emulate his video game counterpart and carry Mario into battle. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie bringing to life so many recognizable items, places, and monsters from the Mario franchise, it's hard to imagine the film not including such a huge staple of the classic games.
