What To Expect From The Super Mario Bros Movie

The upcoming new movie plans to overcome 1993's critical and commercial live-action disappointment Super Mario Bros. by upping the animation quality. The trailers highlight the dazzling 3D animation used by Nintendo and Illumination to capture the game's aesthetic and characters. With Nintendo's knowledge of the original games and Illumination's success in making similar animated films such as Minions, the partnership seemingly works to bring a satisfying adaptation of the game.

The movie's exciting aspect is the anticipated Easter eggs from the games. Based on trailers, the upcoming movie already teases call-backs to classic locations, characters, and abilities from the games, such as the quintessential Rainbow Road race from Mario Kart and Yoshi's Island, first introduced in Super Mario World 2. The trailers have also featured power-ups from the games, such as gold coins and shells thrown to thwart opponents in Mario Kart.

The movie will take many elements from different games in the Mario universe instead of just sticking to Super Mario. However, the adapted movie is also forging its creative path in a few ways, such as the role that Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach will play in the story. In this new adaptation, Luigi seems to be in trouble, while Princess Peach is portrayed with more character depth as a powerful and capable monarch who must use her strength to defend her Mushroom Kingdom. With the nostalgia from the games and new creative directions, The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks to be the next major blockbuster based on a video game franchise.
