A new video gives a first look at an English fandub for the obscure Super Mario Bros. anime 36 years after its release. A year after the original Super Mario Bros. debuted, Nintendo produced Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! in collaboration with Grouper Productions. The Super Mario Bros. movie followed Mario and Luigi after they were sucked into a video game on a quest to save Princess Peach from King Koopa. The 1986 Super Mario Bros. anime was notable as both one of the first video game movies and one of the first isekai animes, and it became a cult favorite with fans.

Although Super Mario Bros. 1986 was never released internationally, a group of devoted fans has now created an English dub for the movie. The Super Mario Bros. Super Radio Show!! account posted a first look video at their fandub on Twitter, showing a short clip of the movie's opening. The group has a longer preview also posted to their YouTube account in which they explain how their fandub will differ from previous ones. The group will be deviating slightly from the anime's original story in an homage to early anime localizations, complete with dubious name changes and weird original songs. The Super Mario Bros. movie fandub is expected to be completed in September. Check it out below.

Super Mario Bros. loyalists never forgot about this obscure anime. In fact, The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! was recently restored in 4K and with updated subtitles by Kineko Video after a years-long effort by fans, after being determined to give the anime the international release it never received. Now, with this new fandub, Mario fans will be able to enjoy Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and the whole Super Mario Bros. world in better quality — though perhaps with worse writing.
