A talented modder is working hard to bring Minecraft and Super Mario 64 together via a mod for the ultimate crossover experience. Mods can bring almost any vision to life, and crossovers are particularly popular within the modding community. As well as classic meme mods that add characters like Thomas the Tank Engine to games like Resident Evil, other popular crossover mods have also added Fall Guys' beans to Skyrim and beyond.

Mods are a great way to freshen up the gameplay and style of lots of video games. Minecraft is an especially popular game for modders, with the game's simple design providing the perfect backdrop not just for game-improvement mods, but also for adding new characters, features, and of course, memes. Minecraft's focus on creative freedom makes it incredibly versatile when it comes to modding, and the thriving modding community continues to add new weird and wonderful ways to enjoy the game. Minecraft mods that have impressed players over the last few months include a mod that introduces Perry the Platypus from Disney's Phineas and Ferb, and even a Minecraft mod inspired by the Demon Slayer anime.

Programmer and game developer Dylan has impressed fans with his work-in-progress Minecraft mod that runs the Super Mario 64 engine. Sharing a highlight reel of the mod in action on Twitter, Dylan's impressive mod shows Super Mario 64's Mario exploring various Minecraft regions, complete with Mario's staple sound effects, jumps, and movesets. Mario doesn't look out of place in the world of Minecraft, but whether or not the mod will ever be available for download is unclear. In a follow-up tweet, Dylan explains: "Due to how Nintendo deals w/ Fan projects (DMCAing em) I sadly can't promise a download, either now or in the future. The most I can do now is post silly videos of what I do in-game with it." While the mod may never be made public, the creation has proven to be a success with more than 52,000 "Likes" on Twitter at the time of writing.

While Nintendo has been known to take action against fan projects that may be infringing on any of its IPs, mods are usually safer than remakes or ROM hacks, though the company could take issue with the use of Super Mario 64 assets being used for the mod. It's possible that, once complete, Dylan's mod could be uploaded for all to enjoy without Nintendo stepping in. If this doesn't turn out to be feasible, players can always find more clips, videos, and details on the mod's development by following Dylan on Twitter.

The mod isn't the first time that Mario and Minecraft have joined forces. The launch of Minecraft on Nintendo Switch brought official Mushroom Kingdom characters to the game via the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. The Pack added a custom Mario-themed Minecraft world, Super Mario 64 music, a texture pack, and 40 characters. Mario has also appeared alongside Minecraft's Steve and Alex thanks to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Until Mojang and Nintendo partner up once again, fans will have to imagine even more Mario mash-ups with the help of the modding community.
