Sony's Super Fly remake has added Grown-ish's Trevor Jackson and Kong: Skull Island's Jason Mitchell to the cast. Director X will handle directing chores on the action movie update. Hip-hop star Future will co-produce the film together with Joel Silver and also curate the soundtrack. Alex Tse (The Watchmen) will write the script.
1972's Super Fly starred Ron O'Neal as Priest, a coke dealer seeking one more big score before retirement. Gordon Parks Jr. directed the film, which went on to become a landmark Blaxsploitation classic. Although the film itself is legendary, the Super Fly soundtrack perhaps stands as the movie's greatest claim to posterity. Soul legend Curtis Mayfield composed the music, including the hit title song and the 2-million-selling single "Freddie's Dead." In 2012, Rolling Stone named the Super Fly soundtrack one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time.
In the original Super Fly, Ron O'Neal played "the dude with a plan to stick it to the man." Trevor Jackson now steps into O'Neal's very fly shoes as the anti-hero cocaine dealer. Jackson currently plays Aaron Jackson on the Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish. In 2017, he starred in the anti-hazing drama Burning Sands. He also appeared in ten episodes of the series American Crime. Jackson happens to be only 21, much younger than O'Neal was when he played Priest in the original. We'll see how the younger lead plays into the movie's approach.
Jackson's Super Fly co-star Jason Mitchell continues a great run of roles that began with his break-out performance as Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton. Mitchell has received awards buzz for his performance as Ronsel Jackson in Dee Rees' Mudbound. Mitchell picked up a paycheck playing Mills in last year's hit Kong: Skull Island. He played Algiers Motel slaying victim Carl Cooper in Kathryn Bigelow's controversial Detroit. Mitchell also appears on Lena Waithe's Showtime series The Chi.
Long-time music video helmer Director X takes on Super Fly after directing one other feature, the drama Across the Line, about a young black hockey player living in Nova Scotia. We'll keep watching for more updates on Super Fly as they become available.
