Alexa has a hidden ‘Super Mode’ that can be quickly and easily activated with a simple and familiar code. While the Alexa Easter egg doesn’t do much in itself, what is interesting is that the spoken command is the same as a button combination that was often used by many gamers when playing Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games. Basically, Alexa understands one of the most famous cheat codes ever.

Tech companies are no stranger to Easter eggs, with Google one of the most notable examples. The company has released Easter eggs that have since stopped working, such as Thanos-snapping Google Search results, but then there are others that have seemingly managed to stand the test of time. For example, Google added a Pac-Man game to Google Search in 2010, along with an ‘I’m feeling lucky’ shortcut, to mark the 30th anniversary of the popular game. In 2021, that same shortcut still works.

Just like Google, Amazon and its Alexa platform also has its secret Easter eggs and hidden tricks which can be easily found when you know how. One of them is the activation of ‘Super Alexa Mode’ which simply requires the device owner to wake up the device with "Alexa" and then say “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.” After which, Alexa will respond by explaining that Super Mode has now been activated and will provide some additional dialog that's worth hearing. Also, as Alexa is available on a variety of different devices, the exact response can vary, and those activating on an Alexa device with a screen can expect a visual Super Mode to be enabled as well.

Alexa Understands The Konami Code

Although the actual command given to Alexa won’t result in any added abilities, it is a fun throwback for those that often used the same exact code while playing Konami games. In fact, while the cheat code is often associated with popular games of the past, it still can be used on a variety of titles today, and even on newer consoles. As an example, the code can be used on Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition to enable a Big Head Mode for all of the characters.

The fact that it can also be used to enable a hidden Super Mode on Alexa devices just goes to show much the Konami —or Contra — Code has impacted pop culture over the years and is no longer simply a way to gain extra lives in a game. For reference, Alexa will respond with “wrong code” when the code is not provided correctly. In these situations, simply reissuing the Konami code once again, and correctly, should resolve the problem and activate the hidden Super Alexa Mode.
