Summit Entertainment Set To 'Drive Angry'

One of two upcoming revenge projects that Nicolas Cage has on his slate - the other being The Hungry Rabbit Jumps - is the thriller, Drive Angry. The film is about a man who sets out for revenge after his daughter is killed and her baby his stolen. His ploy for revenge soon gets out of hand as, "the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.”

As I said at the time, it sounds like the Liam Neeson thriller, Taken on wheels... Something about it must have an interesting hook, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment (who have enjoyed success lately with New Moon making serious box office bank) has picked up the North American distribution rights to Drive Angry.

The studio has set a release date of February 11th, 2011 for the revenge thriller. The deal keeps the company paired up with Cage, after the sci-fi mystery-thriller, Knowing, grossed over $260 million worldwide. As we reported back in August, the project is being developed for (the currently overused) 3D technology. To me it doesn't in any way seem like a movie that needs to be in 3D, and it sounds like they're jumping on the bandwagon just for the hell of it.

I'm very open to be proven wrong with the actual movie itself, however. If it turns out that the 3D is utilized correctly (i.e. enhances the experience rather than distracts from it), and the story calls for the technology, then I'll be happy to eat my words. But at this point, I don't see that being the case.

Do you like the sound of Drive Angry? Do you think 3D is justified for this particular project? Or will it just be a gimmick, as with most movies that use it?

As stated, Drive Angry is slated for a February 11th, 2011 release date.
