Suits Season 7 Finale Will Set Up Spinoff

The Suits season 7 finale will effectively set-up Jessica Pearson's (Gina Torres) spinoff show. Following her resignation from the law firm that she has built and fought to keep by the midseason capper of season 6, Jessica decided to join her on and off and on again lover, Jeff Malone (David Bryan "D.B." Woodside) as he skips town to settle in his new life in Chicago. Obviously, this had shaken the entire Pearson, Specter, Litt firm as it left Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Louis (Rick Hoffman) without a middleman during one of the company's lowest point. Behind the camera, Torres' exit from Suits had something to do with her signing onto the ABC series The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez, which, unfortunately, did not take off.

The legal drama had to bid goodbye to their fiercest and savvy lawyer last season after she realized that her heart is no longer in corporate law. Despite this, the show maintained a great relationship with the actress and gave her character an exit route that would easily let her return in case the situation called for her. A few episodes after her supposed last, Jessica made a grand re-entrance, teasing more appearances from her moving forward. However. when she comes back to Suits this time, it would be to tie-in and at the same time kick off her very own spinoff set in Chicago.

Fans were saddened with the seemingly sudden exit of Torres from the legal drama but the new spinoff would bring her character to the forefront of things and NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Entertainment Networks President Chris McCumber is excited for what show creator Aaron Korsh is cooking up for the ball busting Jessica Pearson:

“The powerhouse character of Jessica Pearson, expertly brought to life by the incomparable Gina Torres, has won the hearts of television fans everywhere. USA Network is beyond thrilled to work with Gina, Aaron Korsh, the entire Suits producing team and our partners at UCP to explore the exciting next phase of Jessica’s story.”

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Chief Content Officer and President of Universal Cable Productions Jeff Wachtel, on the other hand, says that the upcoming spinoff series will be a treat for long time Suits followers who have followed Jessica's journey until her shocking decision to walk away from the firm:

“Gina Torres is a terrific actress and a valued member of our family. Gina and Aaron have created a truly memorable character in Jessica Pearson, and we felt we owed it to the audience – and ourselves! – to follow her journey beyond the original show.”

Not much is known as to the specifics of the spinoff but we know that it will introduce Jessica to the dirty world of politics in the Windy City. Following her last pro-bono case in Suits, she suddenly had a reminder of what drew her to law in the first place - and that is to help serve justice and do right by other people. While Jessica is a proven force with regard to corporate law, it would be interesting how she would fare in the world of politics. Her transition will also be intriguing to see especially with her used to being the woman in charge during her stint in Pearson, Specter, Litt.

Meanwhile, back in New York, the ongoing season of Suits is still feeling the ripple effect of Jessica's absence as Harvey and Louis try to find a power structure that benefits both of them, on top of dealing with their personal issues. Mike, on the other hand, continues to live a double life as he works both for the corporate law firm and the legal clinic.
