Suicide Squad director David Ayer has confirmed a significant change made to the film that would have connected it directly to Justice League. While the massive changes implemented on the latter are well-documented, Suicide Squad was subject to its own studio-mandated rejiggering at the eleventh hour, as well. Both came about as a result of the polarized response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with Ayer being increasingly candid about the divergence from his original vision for the film in recent days.

The original ending for The Joker and Harley Quinn in particular would be one of Ayer's biggest revelations. Originally, Suicide Squad would see The Joker strike a deal with Enchantress after his helicopter crash, planning to return to Gotham City with Harley and rule over the city. However, Harley would ultimately stand up to Mr. J in the finale, with The Clown Prince Of Crime escaping after the Squad stands by her side.

Ayer's latest revelation also reveals the intended ties the movie was to have with Justice League. Responding to a comment on Twitter regarding the ending, Ayer revealed that the original plan was for a Boom Tube to be seen, with Enchantress having been under the control of a Mother Box. Check out Ayer's full tweet on the topic below:

It's not entirely clear from Ayer's comments whether or not these elements actually made it into his cut of the movie. However, the more important impact here is what they say about the early films of the DCEU. Specifically, they make clear that work was being done in the earliest stages to tie Suicide Squad directly into Justice League. Mother Boxes were first seen in Batman v Superman, when Diana views Lex Luthor's metahuman files and sees Victor Stone's body being given its cybernetic upgrades by one of them. Suicide Squad was already setting up links to Justice League with cameos by Batman and The Flash, along with Bruce Wayne obtaining top-secret files on metahumans from Amanda Waller. With Mother Boxes factoring heavily into Justice League, it makes sense that Ayer would have planned to feature them in some capacity in Suicide Squad in order for the two films to be tied together that much more.

While Zack Snyder has spent the better part of the past two years releasing teases of his version of Justice League on social media, David Ayer has begun doing the same in recent months. Ayer's own social media teases have included an unseen image of Jared Leto's Joker holding a gun to Harley's head from the movie's third act. Said image would also include a caption by Ayer alluding to the changes made from his original version of the film.

Ayer is currently set to work with Warner Bros. again, with the director signing on to direct an upcoming remake of The Dirty Dozen. However, his latest comments on the supervillain team-up are sure to ignite greater interest in how different his version of the movie proved to be from the theatrical cut. Though its unclear just how "late in the game" the Apokolips elements of Suicide Squad were jettisoned, the director's revelation will doubtlessly inspire more curiosity for the movie's "Ayer Cut".
