The latest trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad finally confirmed an almost year-long theory about the DCEU film's main villain. Task Force X is on its way back to the big screen as some of DC Comics' most twisted villains pay their dues to society by working for the government. While it will be loosely connected to David Ayer's Suicide Squad, Gunn's installment will see the arrival of a number of new DC characters and tackle a separate threat.

Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and Rick Flag are back, and they will be joined by new players like Peacemaker, Bloodsport, King Shark, Thinker, and Polka-Dot Man. Warner Bros. recently unveiled their second trailer for The Suicide Squad in a very fitting manner as the villains "leaked" the Suicide Squad trailer before its scheduled time. Even though most of the sequel's plot points are being kept under wraps, the footage did unveil more about the reason Amanda Waller is bringing the Task Force X back together.

Even though it was shown but briefly in The Suicide Squad's first trailer, a quick shot showed what appeared to be soldiers with some sort of spores on their faces. This led people to theorize that the main villain of the movie would be none other than the giant alien starfish, Starro, and more, that the plot would involve Starro releasing his parasitic spores and taking control of thousands of humans. Thanks to the new trailer, this theory has officially been confirmed as the alien starfish can be spotted unleashing hundreds of Starro spores during an attack. With Starro serving as the primary antagonist, it justifies Amanda Waller's need to recruit even more members for Task Force X. Whether or not the Starro spores will attach themselves to any of the Suicide Squad members remains to be seen.

Starro-In-The-Suicide-Squad-Trailer-2

Since 2016's Suicide Squad had the original team go up against a supernatural threat, it's an organic development that their next enemy is a giant alien. Admittedly, though, is slightly weird that Starro's first big role in live-action is in a Suicide Squad movie rather than in a Justice League film. In the comics, Starro was the first villain the Justice League ever took on back in 1960. Nevertheless, it's good to see the latest Suicide Squad installment raise the bar by introducing an extraterrestrial antagonist, and Starro as a villain is exactly the kind of thing one might expect in a James Gunn film. That said, it would be a fun acknowledgment of Starro's origins if any of the members of the Squad were to allude to that in the movie, perhaps saying something along the lines of "Isn't this something the Justice League should be taking care of instead of us?"

With the DCEU introducing a big DC Comics villain like Starro the Conqueror and The Suicide Squad's new recruits, the sequel has a lot going for it. Although given how many new characters being introduced, it wouldn't be a stretch if at least one gets taken over by a Starro spore. Despite the surprises that both trailers have already revealed, there are still many unanswered questions for The Suicide Squad.
