The final trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has finally arrived, with lots of new outrageous footage, one butthole joke, and a song typically front and center. As is to be expected of anything from music magpie Gunn - who was of course the driving force behind The Guardians Of The Galaxy's Awesome Mix tapes - the trailer uses its song to great effect, but it's something of a departure from the director's usual approach.

Gunn's previous trailers, including the first for The Suicide Squad, have all used older songs in the same vein as The Awesome Mix. Guardians of The Galaxy scored a huge reaction thanks to Blue Swede's “Hooked on a Feeling,” while the sequel's first teaser debuted with Sweet’s “Fox on the Run”. He even gave the Guardians their own soundtrack hook in Avengers: Infinity War thanks to Detroit Spinners' "Rubberband Man" to immediately joyful effect. In short, the director knows exactly how to weaponize musical nostalgia for his story-telling. In The Suicide Squad trailer 1 he went a little more on-the-nose with Steely Dan's "Dirty Work" as a sort of anti-call-to-arms against Amanda Waller.

For the final trailer for The Suicide Squad, though, Gunn has gone a completely different route, using an original song composed specifically for the movie and never teased before now. The only announcement Gunn has made alluding to this original song surprise came when he tweeted about one of his “favorite current musical artists wrote & recorded a song for #TheSuicideSquad & I feel like I’m standing so close to a pop classic that it’s burning my brain.” He also said the soundtrack  "actually features TWO of my favorite new artists who I’ve professed love for in the past." The trailer's use "Rain" by Grandson song would seem to confirm him as one of those favorite new artists and the fact that it features singer Jessie Reyez suggests it may be both.

While it's unlike Gunn to go with something original, it's not a bad move to confirm that The Suicide Squad is going to be different to what he's made before. There's already bound to be significant comparisons to what Gunn has done with the Guardians for Marvel, even if The Suicide Squad looks significantly darker and more outrageous thanks to its R rating. Throwing in some original music for that purpose makes easy sense.

As for the song itself, the hook of "I don't mind the rain sometimes, it's the only way the roses bloom" fits with the ominous suggestion that every one of the main characters could be up for the chop. Gunn himself has already warned fans not to get too attached to his characters as all of the Suicide Squad could potentially be killed off and while the idea of new life after trauma is good, it does rather confirm that the "rain" is inevitable. Interestingly, that line is also the title of a 2002 song ("I Don't Mind (The Rain)") whose chorus repeats "I don't mind the rain sometimes". Whether that's a conscious tribute worked into The Suicide Squad trailer remains to be seen.
