Warning: contains spoilers for Batman: Fear Stage Omega!

Simon Saint, one of the architects of the recent Fear State, could be best described as a dark mirror of Tony Stark, and now his technology, weapons. and knowledge has fallen into the hands of the Suicide Squad. In Batman: Fear State Omega, on sale now in print and digital, Saint faces a reckoning for his role in bringing Gotham to the brink of destruction, losing his company and fortune—and finding himself under the thumb of Amanda Waller.

Fear State ran through the Batman family of titles and saw Batman and his allies try to stop a super-charged Scarecrow from destroying Gotham. Simon Saint, a Silicon Valley CEO, took an interest in Scarecrow’s work, particularly his idea of the “Fear State,” an “evolved” society created and ruled by fear. Taking advantage of Saint’s deep pockets and technological resources, Scarecrow gave himself a serious upgrade. Next, Saint used his technology to create the Magistrate, a fascist, para-military police force and appointed Sean Mahoney, a corrupt Arkham guard, as Peacekeeper-1. With the Magistrate backing them up, Saint and Scarecrow created a climate of fear in Gotham and were nearly successful in destroying it. Saint eventually realized that Scarecrow had used him, but it was too late for Saint. When Batman defeated Scarecrow, Saint was taken into custody as well and readers learn his fate in Batman: Fear State Omega, written by James Tynion IV, with art for the Simon Saint sequence handled by Ryan Benjamin, with colors by Chris Sotomayor and letters by Clayton Cowles.

Readers learn that Skybase, the flying headquarters of Saint and the Magistrate which plunged to Earth after Scarecrow’s defeat, is still in Gotham Harbor; Lucius Fox is surveying it intently. Readers then learn Saint has been forced out of his company, and the Magistrate “brand” being shuttered before seeing Saint in prison, scared for his life among the bigger, meaner inmates. The remainder of Saint’s tech is being auctioned off to the highest bidder and Saint himself is being put on house arrest, and he will “work off his debt to society under the careful eye of the United States military.” The scene then cuts to Amanda Waller, watching a briefing on Saint’s tech intently.

Simon Saint is now working for Amanda Waller

Simon Saint is the dark Tony Stark of the DC Universe. Both Saint and Stark made their fortune in the technology industries—namely weapons manufacturing. However, Saint never “saw the light” as Tony Stark did in Afghanistan and continued to use his expertise to develop destructive weapons. And because Saint never had a transformative moment like Tony Stark, his pride and hubris blinded him to his manipulation at Scarecrow’s hands—which has now led him to prison and a new boss: Amanda Waller. Saint, who has long been the master of his own destiny, has now been “drafted” into service. Saint will learn humility while serving with Waller—or else.

Simon Saint sought to bring about the Fear State, but his arrogance and pride blinded him to what was truly happening around him, and he is now paying the price: being forced to serve in the Suicide Squad.
