James Gunn revealed the reason behind The Thinker's mysterious ear injury during some scenes of The Suicide SquadThe Thinker is portrayed by Peter Capaldi, best known for portraying the Twelfth Doctor in the British Sci-Fi series Doctor Who. Capaldi also starred in Paddington and its sequel, Christopher Robin and The Personal History of David CopperfieldIn Gunn's film, The Thinker served as a lead scientist on the mysterious Project Starfish that Task Force X is sent to destroy.

Capaldi's supervillain is one of the foes the squad faces in Gunn's movie, with the squad targeting the scientist as part of their plans to access the Jotunheim facility where Project Starfish is kept. It is revealed that The Thinker has been experimenting on a captured Starro and his mind-controlled victims, as seen in a recent gory BTS photo posted by Gunn, for the US Government, with Task Force X being sent to destroy the lab and any evidence of US involvement. However, one small detail about the supervillain has been unclear until now.

During an HBO Max watch party hosted by the director and The Suicide Squad cast, James Gunn revealed the truth behind a small detail involving an injury The Thinker received seemingly out of nowhere. In a tweet, the director revealed that The Thinker attempted to manipulate squad member Polka Dot Man into helping him, only to have the hero use his powers to shoot him after almost giving in to the villain's persuasion. Gunn also stated that the scene was cut but will be available as a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray release. Gunn's full comment is below:

The watch party was held by Gunn and the cast before the film leaves HBO Max on September 5th, with the director sharing other insights about the production, alongside his thinking behind certain choices. The film has seen much success during its release on the streaming service, quickly outperforming prior DC streaming releases such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder's Justice League and becoming the service's most viewed DC film. Despite this, the film will leave the service on September 5, 2021, following its month-long streaming debut, becoming exclusive to theatres until its home release.

Both Capaldi and Gunn enjoyed working with each other on the film, with the actor drawing his character as a wrap gift for Gunn when the movie finished production. Capaldi has previously elaborated on his experiences on set, comparing it to previous work on Doctor Who and saying his fellow castmates were sensational. With his gift to Gunn and praise for the cast, it's clear Peter Capaldi had a good time working on The Suicide Squad, where he got to play a character, so evil even Capaldi's foul-mouthed politician Malcolm Tucker of The Thick Of It would recoil in horror.
