James Gunn's Suicide Squad spin-off series, Peacemaker, reportedly starts filming in January. One of the many upcoming additions to the DC Extended Universe in 2021, John Cena's Peacemaker will be a new member of Task Force X in Gunn's sequel-reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad. While The Suicide Squad does not hit theaters until next August, Cena is already reprising his role in a Peacemaker spin-off series for HBO Max.

The eight-episode series will explore the titular character's origins, described as a "douchey Captain America." The series will see Gunn producing, writing every episode, and directing several episodes. Though many might have assumed that an origin story implies the show will take place before the events of The Suicide Squad, Gunn hinted that the series is not necessarily a prequel to the film. He also revealed the Peacemaker's timeline would not be made clear until after The Suicide Squad. Further adding to the show's hype, Gunn recently confirmed that various Suicide Squad characters would appear in the spin-off series. While many details about the series are being kept mostly under wraps, new information reveals the show will begin filming soon.

According to Hollywood North Buzz, Peacemaker starts filming in January 2021. The series is due to begin filming in Vancouver from January 11 to June 9, 2021, and will go under the working title Scriptures. According to the synopsis for the series, "Peacemaker is a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it."

DC Peacemaker TV Show Logo Revealed By James Gunn & John Cena

Peacemaker marks the latest DC project for HBO Max, following J.J. Abrams' upcoming Justice League: Dark series and a spin-off series based on Matt Reeves' The Batman. Fans were shocked by the spin-off series news, as Gunn had only recently revealed The Suicide Squad's new characters at DC FanDome in August, including Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). The film will also see returning faces, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

While it's unclear whether Peacemaker will expand into more seasons or is meant to be one season, it will be interesting to see the different ways the character can be explored. The Suicide Squad does not release for another year, and a new character that fans have yet to meet is already getting his own show means good things for the film. Considering the mixed-poor reactions to Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. must have a lot of faith in Gunn's film, which fans hope will be better than the first one. It will be exciting to see Cena's portrayal of Peacemaker and the direction his story will go.
