Peacemaker stars John Cena and Jennifer Holland hilariously recap The Suicide Squad. James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel unleashed Cena’s new DC character Peacemaker, who now gets his own streaming show on HBO Max.

When fans last saw Cena’s Peacemaker he was of course seemingly dead after being shot by Idris Elba's Bloodsport and then squashed by the collapsing Jotunheim reactor. But no one’s ever really gone in the world of comic book movies, especially when the character in question happens to be incredibly popular with fans. So Peacemaker has predictably been rescued from death and given a new mission on HBO Max. Cena is joined on his latest adventure by his The Suicide Squad co-stars Holland and Steve Agee, along with Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma and Chukwudi Iwuji.

Of course fans who are ready to embark on the latest Peacemaker mission may not all have seen his original exploits in The Suicide Squad. For those who need a catch-up, Cena and Holland got into character as Peacemaker and Harcourt for a quick video recap that unsurprisingly goes down a hilarious and profane route. Peacemaker is of course a vigilante who somewhat paradoxically thinks peace can only be maintained through tremendous amounts of violence. Harcourt meanwhile has the unenviable task of trying to keep this maniac in check, and even from the brief clip above it’s easy to see how this dynamic plays out between the two characters. With Gunn developing the Peacemaker series and directing some of the episodes, it’s fair to assume that the mayhem level will remain high and that the show will be peppered with off-the-wall comedy touches. Indeed, Gunn may have discovered the perfect vehicle for his particular brand of superhero hijinks in Peacemaker, a character who seems utterly oblivious to how absurd he and his exploits actually are.

If Gunn can indeed recapture some of the magic of The Suicide Squad, then Peacemaker will be a worthy addition to his filmography and a great treat for fans of the DCEU who are craving more of what Gunn brought to the comic book movie universe. Of course there’s always a chance that the joke could wear thin, an extra danger with a character like Peacemaker who seems a little one-note. It’s up to Gunn and company to add the kind of human touches to Peacemaker that might allow the show to develop beyond just being an extended gag centered on a truly ridiculous character. Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max with a three-episode drop on January 13, 2022.
