The Suicide Squad's Polka-Dot Man, David Dastmalchian, has teased his potential involvement in Clerks 3 in a behind-the-scenes Instagram picture with Kevin Smith. Dastmalchian plays the tragi-comic Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn's standalone sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad. The character, a metahuman who can spawn energy-filled polka dots from his body, has been a hit with audiences and is quickly becoming a fan-favorite. The movie also seems to be a success with audiences, as it looks set to clock up $30 million at the box office over its opening three days.

Written, directed, and co-starring Kevin Smith as Silent Bob, Clerks 3 is the follow-up to 1994's cult-classic, Clerks, and 2006's sequel, Clerks 2. Filming for Clerks 3 kicked off on Smith's 51st birthday earlier this week in the New Jersey Quick Stop, where the movie is set. As filming gets underway, Smith and others from the cast and crew have started sharing some new behind-the-scenes images from the set. The threequel brings back original stars Jeff Anderson as Randal, Brian O’Halloran as Dante, and Jay Mewes as Silent Bob's best friend Jay. Audiences most recently saw Jay and Silent Bob in 2019's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, where Dastmalchian co-starred with them in a brief cameo role as a nervous SWAT officer.

Posting on Instagram, Dastmalchian poses with Smith, his co-star and director, outside the famous Quick Stop shop. The picture looks to be a BTS image from the set of the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Dastmalchian, looking wide-eyed at the camera, is dressed in a SWAT team costume, complete with a bullet-proof vest and helmet. Smith, pointing up at his co-star, is dressed in his Silent Bob garb. In the post, Dastmalchian wishes Smith the "happiest of birthdays" and ends the caption in a cliffhanger hinting at a possible return to his character in Clerks 3. Check out the photo below:

Dastmalchian, who made his film debut as an escaped Arkham Asylum inmate in The Dark Knight, has been building his superhero movie CV in recent years. He appeared as Kurt in Ant-Man and its sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and has had roles in Gotham and The Flash. More recently, of course, he has most donned the polka dot suit in The Suicide Squad and will be seen in the upcoming Dune. Dastmalchian's acting skills would therefore be well known to Smith, a huge comic book and superhero movie fan, and the writer/director might have decided to give Dastmalchian an expanded role in Clerks 3 as the Polka-Dot Man actor becomes more familiar to audiences.

Drawing from Smith's own life experience, the story of Clerks 3 will follow Randal who, after a heart attack, enlists his fellow clerks to make a movie about his life at the Quick Stop. While there has been no casting announcement about Dastmalchian's involvement, and the actor's Instagram post could simply be a reference to his excitement for Smith's upcoming film, the teased "cliffhanger ending" of the post suggests Dastmalchian might have a role to play in Clerks 3. Helpfully, Dastmalchian appears to have a relatively free schedule, with only the upcoming Last Voyage of the Demeter in his diary. Clerks 3 does not yet have an official release date.
