With Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice now in theaters, we have a firmer grasp on what to expect from the DC Extended Universe. And next on the DCEU's docket is this summer's Suicide Squad - a film which sees cagey government agent, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assemble a task force comprised of 'the worst of the worst' for a mission that's downright suicidal.
Suicide Squad marks the first big screen appearance for many of these ne'er do-wells, including Deadshot, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn, further establishing the villainous side of the DCEU. The film will also introduce their version of The Joker (as played by Jared Leto) and - as we've seen in set videos and the trailers - he and Harley will tangle with Ben Affleck's Batman during some point in the movie. It's still unclear whether the scene in question occurs as a flashback (possibly as part of Harley Quinn's origin) or during the events of the film, but we've known Batman would have a role to play in Suicide Squad for some time. Though, as it turns out, Batman's role may be bigger than we initially thought.
During his latest insider video for Heroic Hollywood, Umberto Gonzalez shares that Warner Bros. has held test screenings for Suicide Squad, and according to his sources, "there is a lot more Batman in the movie than they are letting on." And though for the time being this rumor is nothing more than mere speculation, it wouldn't be all that surprising to learn Batman's role in Suicide Squad is substantial. When the film was shooting in Vancouver last summer there were already rumors Batman and Waller share a key scene, one in where Batman either warns Waller of The Joker or perhaps advises her against creating Task Force X - the Suicide Squad.
But extra scenes with Waller may not be all there is, as Gonzales and co-host Daniel Alter go on to suggest that since Suicide Squad's roster includes typical Batman rogues (Joker, Harley, Croc) and a few of his part-time allies (Deadshot, Katana), he may be quite prevalent throughout the film. And even if that doesn't necessarily translate to more screen time for Affleck, it could mean that Batman's presence hangs over the movie - a constant reminder that should Task Force X step too far out of line, he's there to reign them in.
The next Suicide Squad trailer is expected to drop soon and like its previous trailer, which was accompanied by Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", this new trailer is also reportedly cut to another upbeat, energizing tune - Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz". And again, though only rumor, Alter did correctly predict they'd use "Bohemian Rhapsody" for their last trailer and "Ballroom Blitz" is very much in the same vein.
