Suicide Squad actor Joel Kinnaman, who played Rick Flag in 2016's David Ayer directed film, wants to see the Ayer Cut released. Kinnaman will be reprising his role in this year's James Gunn directed sequel, The Suicide Squad, but the actor still has the first film on his mind, as do many fans. Suicide Squad was a highly anticipated team-up of DC's most popular villains, but the film ultimately failed to impress.

Many thought the film fell flat, an even harsher prognosis given the film's massive potential and star-power. Margot Robbie debuted her now iconic Harley Quinn, as did Jared Leto with his take on the Joker. Joining them were Will Smith, Viola Davis, and Cara Delevingne. Since the film's debut, many have called for a director's cut to be released and with Zack Snyder's Justice League on the horizon, renewed interest into what has been dubbed the Ayer Cut has only gained more traction.

Lending their voice to the growing movement is Kinnaman. On The Playlist PodcastKinnaman expressed his desire to see Ayer's cut of the film, saying that everyone wants to see a director's true vision for a film. Kinnaman cites Suicide Squad's massive budget as one of the reasons Ayer had to possibly compromise his vision. The actor ultimately says that it's a shame that fans have yet to see Ayer's version of the film.

You always wanna see the filmmaker’s cut, you know? It’s always a shame when the filmmaker’s vision doesn’t make it to the cinema. Of course, there’s always going to be compromise. I find it’s the bigger the budget, the bigger the compromise. Usually that’s the case.

If the last year has proven anything, it's that something like the Ayer Cut is now a possibility. After many of Justice League's stars called for Snyder's version of the film to be released, Warner Bros. ultimately relented and gave the director the tools to complete his vision. This will all culminate in a four-hour long film to be released in March on HBO Max. Similar to the movement for the Snyder Cut, many stars from Suicide Squad  have expressed their support of the releasing of Ayer's version of the film.

Many hope that the Ayer Cut could fill in some plot holes that the original film left unanswered and improve on a film that had so much potential. With so many strong characters whose personalities were bolstered by solid performances, the film falling flat seemed like a massive missed opportunity and an Ayer Cut could rectify that. It could also shed some light on the original plans for the DCEU, plans that have remained muddled in confusion as the studio struggles to get the franchise back on track. However, an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad could ultimately distract from those plans and it seems unlikely that the studio would invest in something like that after calling Snyder's own director's cut a storytelling dead-end.
