Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad: King Shark #7!

Among the Suicide Squad, the being known as King Shark is considered one of the premiere members of the team as well as a fan-favorite. Especially after the successful release of 2021's The Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn, Nanaue (King Shark's birth name) has appeared in the comics with more regularity than before. But in Suicide Squad: King Shark #7, DC finally answers the question of whether or not King Shark is half-human...and why he has a lower half in the first place.

In King Shark's solo series, Amanda Waller makes good on her deal with Nanaue's father: Lord Chondrakha, the God of All Sharks. Waller has allowed King Shark to periodically leave the prison of Belle Reve for family visits. In return, King Shark's father allows Waller to use his son on dangerous missions; she's unable to place the small explosive inside his head due to his think skin which renders him impervious to needles (and his rapid healing factor could potentially allow him to survive the explosion as well).

In a revelatory flashback sequence at the beginning of the issue, readers see Amanda Waller meet Lord Chondrakha and Nanaue for the first time. But ever before that memorable encounter, readers see a baby Nanaue play with a dog outside his family home. King Shark's father is despondent at his son's playful nature. "Despite me giving him the two-legged man-form so that he might compete against other exemplars...he is soft!" Father clearly wishes his son to become a killer...which is exactly what happens, courtesy of Waller.

The Wild Games are tremendously important to Lord Chondrakha. He knows that the arena will be filled with a variety of animals with different attributes. Thus, he granted King Shark the ability to walk and run on two legs to better compete with the other contestants. This is a massive advantage for a being that mostly lives at home in the water; King Shark would otherwise move awkwardly on land and be easy to kill. The other attribute - the killer instinct - was granted to him by Waller.

This reveals once and for all that King Shark was not arrested and placed into Belle Reve, unlike the vast majority of Suicide Squad prisoners. King Shark was a creation of his father specifically to win the Wild Games. In that respect, Waller and Lord Chondrakha are very much alike: both use the Suicide Squad and King Shark to further their very specific goals.
