Five years after Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady has finally revealed their upcoming game, and it's not what fans expected. Five years worth of rumors and speculation have led to the reveal of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The game will see a 2022 release, with the potential of it being an open world adventure set in Metropolis. Players will have the option to either play solo or with up-to-four-player-co-op. The Suicide Squad game will also be a continuation of the Arkham series.

In the premiere trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Task Force X has been given the task of... well, killing the Justice League, hence the title. However, the story of the game does bring with it the question of why they're trying to kill the hero team at all. On top of this, despite Justice League's heroic reputation, it seems they are the villains of the Suicide Squad game world, at least currently.

Early in the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League trailer, fans saw a Brainiac ship parked right in the middle of a destroyed Metropolis, possibly due to a battle between Justice League and Brainiac. However, later in the trailer, Superman appears to have just saved a pilot... until he disintegrates him with his laser eyes. Just like that, questions were raised about the nature of the Justice League and why they've suddenly turned villain from hero. The first answer is quite simple, and it's also the most likely explanation for what's happening in the trailer. Seeing as Brainiac will likely be present in the game, it's possible he is the one controlling the Justice League's actions.

How Brainiac Can Control The Justice League

This wouldn't be unusual considering the immense set of powers that Brainiac possesses. He's able to possess humans and even transfer his consciousness onto other beings, as well as steal information from the minds of the people he takes over. It's also worth noting that Captain Boomerang appears to have received a new power. Unlike his comic book counterpart, it seems that whenever Captain Boomerang throws a boomerang, he physically teleports along with it. However, some fans have said that it looks more like he possesses super-speed in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which could be a nod to his son in the comics.

It's not out of the realm of possibilities to consider that Amanda Waller sent her team of villains to take down the Justice League not just because of Brainiac's control over them, but also because of the damage that's been caused. This would make the most sense, especially if fans will be playing as different members of the Suicide Squad at certain points of the story, likely meaning there'll be multiple confrontations between both teams throughout Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Where Is The Rest Of The Justice League?

Superman Suicide Squad

While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's trailer revealed Superman, it was Superman alone. It could merely be because Rocksteady wasn't ready yet to showcase the rest of the heroes-turned-villains, but it's also possible that Brainiac has killed individual members of the League, which could've potentially flipped Superman and its remaining members onto the dark side. It would also explain why the Justice League aren't fighting off the attack from Brainiac's minions. While unlikely, this is still certainly possible.

Regardless, Rocksteady has gone in a very different direction with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. This is definitely not a bad thing, as the new setting and characters allow for more creativity from the developers, and expanding on the Arkham-verse is always a plus. It'll also be interesting to see the approach they take to the team dynamics of both the Suicide Squad and Justice League as the game slowly edges closer to it's 2022 release window.
