Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League pits Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Deadshot against a brainwashed team of heroes, but many team members have yet to appear during the trailers. The Suicide Squad’s skills and powers make them formidable opponents for many heroes, though a few omitted characters could provide significant challenges with gameplay mechanics and story. Each member of the Suicide Squad is infamous for facing (and losing against) one or multiple heroes, making Kill the Justice League a twisted, underdogs story.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's trailers have confirmed that the game will take place in Metropolis, a city under siege by brainwashed members of the Justice League. Following the military's failure to contain the threat, Amanda Waller sends Deadshot, Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang to eliminate each rogue hero. Unfortunately, the threat of Brainiac and his ships over the city remains, posing a genuine threat to life on Earth. Each playable character will enjoy various abilities and playstyles based on footage in the game’s cinematic trailers, with Harley Quinn making use of Batman's grapnel gun, and Captain Boomerang utilizing some kind of teleportation device, although Rocksteady is yet to unveil full unedited gameplay.
The lineup of the Justice League's team has regularly changed over the years, including iconic heroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, with arguably the most influential line-ups involving seven members. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League appears to feature five members in its version of the League, but there's always potential for more DC superheroes to appear. Although some of the most famous incarnations of the League have featured as few as seven members in the past, others have increased the line-up to incorporate dozens more. That doesn't mean that Rocksteady's game will boast as expansive a roster as some of the previous depictions of the team, but that there is precedent for more Leaguers to appear, either as Brainiac's brainwashed minions, or potentially as allies to a non-evil Wonder Woman in Kill the Justice League.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - Martian Manhunter
Though he isn’t as popular as Superman, Martian Manhunter is another otherworldly superhero as part of the League. Hailing from Mars, the Martian Manhunter’s secret identity is J’onn J’onzz, though he goes by John Jones when he's disguised. Early iterations of the character remained on Earth as part of the Justice League due to an inability to return home. This goal later shifted to building a trusting relationship between humanity and the Martians.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League promises superpowered combat, and Manhunter’s abilities could provide a significant challenge. J’onn J’onzz is capable of density shifting, shape-shifting, telepathy, and flight and could be a greater threat than Superman himself, given he possesses similar powers.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - Green Arrow
Flash is one of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League's confirmed heroes and a close friend of Green Arrow. The archer isn’t the most intimidating of characters but has appeared within the Batman: Arkham universe through various Queen Industries Easter eggs.
Thanks to the Arrow CW show and more active roles within well-received comic storylines, Green Arrow has also enjoyed increased popularity in recent years. While Oliver doesn’t have any superpowers to speak of, he could act in direct competition with Deadshot, who excels in marksmanship as much as Star City’s Emerald Archer.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - Black Canary
While Green Arrow has enjoyed significant popularity in recent years, Black Canary has also enjoyed her time in the spotlight. Legends of Tomorrow and Birds of Prey both portrayed the character in a leading role. A double-team boss fight with Green Arrow and Black Canary could diversify superpowered combat from the Batman: Arkham games, whose villains frequently only faced the Dark Knight one at a time.
Black Canary and Green Arrow are romantic and crime-fighting partners, with the former being one of the most powerful members of the Justice League. Canary utilizes super-sonic vocal attacks with her Canary Cry, capable of shattering glass and producing powerful shockwaves. Black Canary also has a connection with Harley Quinn, who interacted with the Birds of Prey on several occasions.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - John Constantine
John Constantine has had a complicated relationship with the Justice League but maintained regular membership with the Justice League: Dark, who focused on the magical threats of the DC universe. Despite initial hesitance to join the League, Constantine proves an invaluable ally in the fight against mystical forces.
John Constantine was nearly an Injustice character, but has only appeared in DC Universe Online for DC video games. However, his status as an antihero and magical abilities could make him one of Brainiac’s most powerful tools. The Suicide Squad faces supernatural threats occasionally within movies and comics, but John Constantine could provide a different challenge for the superpowered convicts.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - Aquaman
Metropolis is located on a shoreline, meaning Kill The Justice League could add another character and embrace aquatic combat mechanics for an offshore boss fight with Aquaman. Aquaman is another Justice League hero who has enjoyed increased popularity from recent films, including the upcoming Aquaman and the Long Kingdom movie featuring Jason Mamoa. For many years Aquaman was considered the joke of the Justice League by certain fans, with some believing the character to be useless without water. Thankfully recent adaptations of the character have solidified his status as the deadly warrior he truly is.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - Cyborg
Though Cyborg frequently appears in the Teen Titans’ ranks, the mechanical warrior also enjoys membership with the Justice League in several continuities. Cyborg enjoys many abilities, including resistance to the elements, alien weaponry, adaptive defense systems, and natural affluence for technology. Metropolis is one of the most advanced cities in DC, meaning Cyborg could weaponize any number of digital and mechanical defenses, serving a Batman-esque role in the Suicide Squad game. With military-grade equipment laying across the city, Cyborg could become a significant threat to the Suicide Squad and Metropolis’ civilian population.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League - Red Tornado
Red Tornado is another non-human member of the Justice League, created by the villainous inventor T.O. Morrow. As an android, Red Tornado enjoys numerous resistances and superhuman abilities, most notably his power to manipulate and create airstreams. Red Tornado’s usually mild-mannered nature could be corrupted by Brainiac’s mind control, resulting in a devastating boss fight. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League hasn’t revealed gameplay, but characters’ abilities in cinematic trailers all include some form of verticality. Introducing Red Tornado could take advantage of aerial combat while also providing a fresh new face to battle.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has embraced the idea of putting heroes in a villainous role, pitting players against usually kind-hearted characters. Villains beating their heroic rivals is a rare event, especially in recent DC games, but Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad have never abided by traditional storytelling convention. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is scheduled for a 2022 release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC systems, with no specific release date currently set.
