David Ayer shares a never-before-seen image of Jared Leto's Joker and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. This has resulted in fans starting to campaign for the Release the Ayer Cut campaign - a spin on the ongoing Justice League's Release the Snyder Cut movement which demands the roll out of Zack Snyder's original work in the movie.

It's been three years since Warner Bros.' anti-hero-centric film released in theaters debuting a handful of DC characters including Leto as the Clown Prince of Crime and his lover, Robbie's Harley. The project went on to become a box office success, earning $746.8 million worldwide against a budget of just $175 million, not to mention an Academy Award for make-up and hairstyling. However, the flick proved to be divisive, with the studio altering course for supposed sequels. While Harley is still set to continue being part of the DCEU with Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Leto's stint is bleak. Especially with Todd Phillips' Joker film introducing Joaquin Phoenix as a new version of the character.

Amidst all this, fans are still curious to learn more about Ayer's original vision for Suicide Squad. After sharing a new image of Joker and Harley during test screenings, fans have expressed their desire to see the so-called Ayer Cut. Check out the image below:

Not everyone is overly interested in seeing the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad as some reasoned out that with Phoenix's Joker both being a critical and commercial success, it's best to focus on that and move on from the past. Leto, for his part, seemed to have left his DC days behind after scoring a new superhero gig with Sony's Morbius where he will play the title character - Morbius The Living Vampire. All that being said, it's also no secret that Ayer's original plan was different from what ultimately ended on the big screen -  the director himself confirmed that. While he was able to oversee the whole production of the 2016 flick unlike Snyder in Justice League, that doesn't mean that he had full creative controls of the project until the very end.

So, will a Release the Ayer Cut be as big as the Release the Snyder Cut movement? Probably not. The latter has been going on since 2017 and Warner Bros. has been firmly mum on the matter - even with big stars such as Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck and Jason Momoa supporting the cause. At this point, it's anybody's guess whether or not they'll heed to fans' request or at least comment about it. Things are quite different with Suicide Squad, however, since a supposed soft reboot is on the way, it's much easier to sweep similar calls under the rug.
