Director David Ayer reveals that a lot of Jared Leto's work as the Joker in Suicide Squad has yet to be seen. In 2016, Warner Bros. and DC Films released their first anti-hero-centric film, which debuted some of the comics brand's most notable villains, including the now fan-favorite Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), and the Clown Prince of Crime. While marketing for the movie focused on selling the Joker's involvement, fans were surprised of his limited screen time in the film itself.

This obviously caused backslash, accusing the film of misleading viewers. After all, Suicide Squad's marketing posed that Joker will be a key player in the film's narrative. In the end, his appearance was nothing more than just a glorified cameo as he only popped in several times in relation to Harley's stint as a member of Amanda Waller's (Viola Davis) ragtag team. Now, Ayer reveals that there's still a lot of Leto's performance that has yet to be released in public, describing the actor's work in the role as "magnificent."

On his official Twitter account, Ayer says that he's still baffled how fans are still talking about Suicide Squad, particularly Leto's take on the Joker. In his post, he revealed that the current comics run was his primary inspiration for his version of Clown Prince of Crime. He also revealed that so much of the actor's work as the character is still unseen and that he feels bad about that. Check out his full post below:

Ayer's comments about Leto's Joker in his Suicide Squad follows his revelation that his planned arc for Harley Quinn in the movie was eviscerated. It's curious if they have any correlation with each other, considering that the characters are typically known for their relationship in the comics. It's no secret that the movie was a victim of rushed production with the director only given six weeks to write its screenplay. Couple that with studio meddling in response to reviews of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justiceand fans were offered a film that had significant deviations from Ayer's original plans. This is one of the reasons why the public are still talking about the project with a lot of people interested to learn how it would've panned out of the filmmaker was given total creative freedom on the job.

Whether or not Ayer's original plan for Suicide Squad remains to be seen - the same could be said about Leto's unseen Joker footage. At this point, it doesn't seem like the actor will be reprising his DC role any time soon as he moves on to play a Marvel role as Morbius The Living Vampire in Sony's MorbiusJoaquin Phoenix's version that debuted in the DCEU-separate Joker is also taken as an indication that Warner Bros. is ready to leave Leto's iteration behind. All that being said, Task Force X will continue with James Gunn's soft reboot/sequelThe Suicide Squad.
