Idris Elba Rumored to be Playing Bronze Tiger in The Suicide Squad

Idris Elba Bronze Tiger The Suicide Squad.

New rumors suggest that Idris Elba will be playing Bronze Tiger in The Suicide Squad. The film will serve as both a sequel and somewhat of a soft reboot of David Ayers' 2016 original, and previous stars Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman will return. They will be joined by Task Force X newcomers Ratcatcher (played by Daniela Melchior) and Polka-Dot Man (played by David Dastmalchian). King Shark is also rumored to be a part of the film, though Michael Rooker recently denied being cast.

That particular casting would have made sense, however, as Rooker frequently works with James Gunn, who was hired to helm the sequel. The job came in the wake of the Guardians of the Galaxy director being fired by Disney over some controversial comments. The company ultimately reversed their decision, however, opting to allow Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and conclude his trilogy - but not before he has finished work on The Suicide Squad.

Elba was already confirmed to have a starring role in the film; and after it was revealed that Will Smith would be unable to return, it was suspected that Elba would take over as Deadshot. It was soon revealed, however, that he would play a new character, and speculation immediately ran rampant as to which comic book character he would bring to life. According to Forbes, it's believed that he will be playing Ben Turner (a.k.a Bronze Tiger).

The news comes in the wake of Robert Pattinson being officially cast as Batman. Bronze Tiger, who made his comic book debut in 1975, was most recently played by Michael Jai White on The CW's Arrow. After appearing briefly in season 2, he served a more central role in season 7. With season 8 set to be Arrow's last, however, the character is wide open for a big screen outing - not that DC and Warner Bros. tend to mind multiple versions of some characters existing at once.

Despite a recent glimpse at a storyboard, details regarding the plot remain unsurprisingly scarce. Benicio del Toro is, however, reportedly being eyed as the film's villain, who is simply being referred to as "The Mayor" and described as an "irascible old warrior who lives for war." As with that report, though, there is yet to be an official announcement regarding Elba's role. Still, it would make sense. In the comics, Bronze Tiger was one of the first recruits to Task Force X. And, with acclaimed roles in everything from The Wire to Luther, Elba has more than proven himself. Not only does he have the requisite strength and toughness for the character, but he has the air of authority that befits the Suicide Squad's second-in-command.
